The OSA Trilogy: Part One
Filed under: 11206, 11211, 11222, East Williamsburg, East Williamsburg Brooklyn, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn
After much ado and two extensions, OSA; Opace Space Alliance North Brooklyn has released their financial statement for 2008. Of particular interest to yours truly is this:
OSA Presents, Inc. (per the New York Department of State Corporation Database) hails from 79 North 11 Street, Brooklyn, New York. The Brooklyn Brewery. Steve Hindy, Proprietor.
Now let’s compare OSA Presents, Inc. with OSA’s mission statement:
For decades the Greenpoint/Williamsburg communities have been severely under served for park space. OSA is dedicated to filling that need. By supplementing the New York City Parks Department’s basic operations with private funds, OSA proposes to initiate a large array of capital projects and community programs.
OSA will boost public awareness of the crucial role parks play in the urban environment, while gaining support from donors and volunteers for restoration and new development projects. Through a formal partnership agreement with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, OSA allows the community to have a voice in the management and maintenance of existing parks– and the creation of new parks…
Greenpoint has not fared well under OSA’s oversight. A glorified campsite with wood chips and assorted industrial detritus does not a “park” make, OSA. “Interim” or otherwise.
This sucks.
How can the “community” have a voice when “certain members of the board” of OSAnb elected— without “community” knowledge or feedback— to start an organization whose purpose seems to be perpetuating said org? Why is OSAnb (for all intents and purposes) a government-sponsored “event organizer”? It’s rather Kafka-esque and/or Orwellian when you think about it.
I’ll leave up for you, dear readers, to decide. Here’s Part I.

New York Shitty Day Ender: A Street Fair on Manhattan Avenue?
Although this is (obviously) a ways off I wanted to bring it to your attention anyway: any and all who would like to see a street fair this summer should head to 1018 Manhattan Avenue (AKA: The Greenpoint Grocery) and sign the petition. The proposed date for the “Greenpoint Hispanic Festival” is August 8, 2010 and the location will be Manhattan Avenue between Green and Dupont Street. I for one would love to see this happen. If you do too head over to 1018 and grace this petition with your John Hancock!

just wanted to let you know that the crazy lady w/ the ‘king of beers’ xmas tree-tower, now has a cardboard sign on her fire escape and all I can read is “Fuck You”…Â She’s taking it to a whole new level
Welcome home.
Fuck you.

P.S.: In as best as I can tell this sign reads “Don’t fool with me — The Chyssy Woman”.

New York Shitty Day Starter: Paulie Gee’s Update
A number of you have asked me when Paulie Gee’s, the pizzeria slated to take over Paloma’s old space, is going to open. Here’s an update from the man himself, Paulie Gee! He writes:
I can’t give you an opening date yet, but I can give you a glimpse into what you’ll find at our place once the doors open. On Saturday I pulled the first pie out of my hand crafted in from Naples, Stefano Ferrara oven. It was a very gratifying moment for me.
I can’t hardly wait for everyone to see the rest of my fire-breathing beauty, along with the rest of the our quickly transforming space. I very wisely left the design and construction up to Evan and Oliver Haslegrave of www.home-nyc.com and the creative force behind The Manhattan Inn. As with the Inn, the materials they are utilizing are reclaimed and much of it has been sourced from Build It Green in Astoria. Their work in the space so far is nothing short of astounding. I also have attached my recently unveiled logo, which I’m looking forward to the residents of North Brooklyn spotting on Greenpoint Avenue very soon.
That’s one mouth-watering pie, Paulie!
Oh yeah, and the logo is rather nice too.

The real estate market may very well be “regulating” itself. That’s not what I am observing rent-wise. I say this as someone who had a rather obnoxious and very ILLEGAL rider on my (rent-stabilized) lease. I tossed it into the trash, signed the lease and we cut the check. Once the check is deposited it is a legal contract. If “refused” the matter will clog the bowels of Housing Court. FOR A LONG TIME.
What bothers me more is Joann Kims, ‘ situation. It is typical:
I am being kicked out of my apartment Feb 1st (long story, none of which is my doing). I need a roommate or an apartment by Feb 1st. Any leads would be appreciated. My budget is max $1100. I am clean, especially in the kitchen. I detest clutter. I have a dog. I tend to be reclusive when home. I have dinner get gatherings every so often. Apt must be in Greenpoint.
Miss Kim has done a lot for this community. She was and is the brains behind the Greenpoint Food Market. Something I and many others have enjoyed. If you wish to have Joann as a roomie contact me at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. I’ll gladly forward your email.
