Greenpoint Video Du Jour: There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays!
(even in it is a foster home) If there is one thing the whole, sad “Lucas affair” revealed it was that the guys at Pets on the Run have a lot of heart. 
For this reason I am very pleased to announce that while their beloved companion* may very well be gone forever, it didn’t stop these good fellas from opening up their store and their hearts to another wonderful feline in need of a good home. His name is Oreo and as you can see in the image to the right, he is rather found of rawhide sticks.
I have been told by Oreo’s new step-dad that he was not always the feisty, handsome, one year old meat-loving chap you see here. Apparently his owners were about to throw him on the streets when these guys got wind of it and took him in. It should also be noted that Oreo was also sporting a rather nasty cold and they have lovingly restored him back to good health. He has since shown his gratitude by meeting and greeting customers and providing a little in-store entertainment! Which brings me to the following footage I shot of this lad in action. Enjoy!
It is my understanding that Oreo will be up for adoption after he is neutered. I for one hope these guys elect to keep him. The Garden Spot of the Universe can never have too many shop cats!

*Who is missed by many, including one little girl named Lucia who made this heart-wrenchingly sweet sympathy card which hangs over this establishment’s front door.
It reads:

It would appear that Santa and his little helpers have paid an early visit to the India Street entrance of the Church Avenue bound G train! I wonder what killed this little fella? If I had to hazard a guess I’d say it was the MTA’s proposed service cuts.

Gratuitious Food Porn: Got Babka?
Remember the babkaporn I featured a little over a week ago? If not, the following should jog your memory.
Today as I walked by Jubilatka Bakery I succumbed to temptation and picked up one of these bad boys for Christmas dinner. It set me back $18.00 dollars, but what the hell? We only live once.
Luca, our household capo, was nonplussed with my newly-acquired chocolate gingerbread creation. Mind you Luca also grunts, snorts, farts and licks his ass on occasion. While a loving companion, a gourmand Luca is most decidedly not. I, on the other hand, can’t wait to give this a try. Yum!

I have no idea who this child’s parents are— but whoever they are, they are very, very lucky. I have never in all my years seen someone have so much fun shoveling snow. Of course, part of this raspscallion’s mirth might be due to the fact he was beaning passersby with loads of the stuff. He hit the Mister not just once, but twice. I like this kid.

One of the best streets to stroll this holiday season is without argument Oak Street. At night this otherwise modest street is nothing short of being Las Vegasesque with all manner and variety of electrical Christmas cheer. I came across your site while do some research on Greenpoint. Thank you for offering a not-so-tongue-in-cheek perspective of the neighborhood with great photos and frequent updates.
I am considering purchasing a condo in the Belvedere property at 206 Kent Street and would greatly appreciate any advice you may have. I’m twenty-three, work in midtown, live on the south shore of Nassau County and ready to move out.
My knee-jerk reaction: if you’re 23 years old and financially enabled to buy a condo I envy you. Secondly, I harbor a hatred for these buildings. The non-sequential (and increasingly cheaply constructed) dynasty that is Belvedere epitomizes the crapification of my neighborhood. Throw ’em up quick and cheap. The previous having been written, at least the air conditioning units are not on the balconies. YET. That’s becoming a more common feature nowadays.
Here’s the deal:
- Belvedere/Bridge Realty has been tossing these buildings up left and right in north Brooklyn. And the supply is NOT in keeping with demand. If you go to Calyer Street you will notice Belvedere VI— or is it Belvedere VIII— I cannot keep track— is advertising “luxury” apartments for rent. These apartments have been on the market for well over a year.
- Belvederes VI, VIII and XXVIII have one thing in common: a close proximity to McGuinness Boulevard. Inasmuch as I find this, the Champs-Élysées of Greenpoint, charming I would not to live close to it. ESPECIALLY given there is a fire station one block away from your condo in question and the largest waste treatment plant on the East Coast will probably perfume your balcony.
- If you work in Midtown and have the kind of budget I suspect you have, Anonymous, why trifle with this? Go to Long Island City. It’s a buyer’s market, you will have a direct commute to midtown (via the 7 train)Â and get a beautiful park to boot!* My advice: haggle. HARD.
My two cents (and then some) having been tendered, I’ll leave this matter to my readers. Thoughts/advice, anyone?

*What I find endearing about Greenpoint is not for everyone. Methinks Anonymous is one of them. What’s more, I hate to see someone get ripped off.
