LAST GASP: What’s Up At Coco 66?

July 12, 2011 ·

I have noticed a number of search query “hits” about this establishment on the back-end of my web site recently. So much so that this afternoon I did a walk by to see what’s up.

By all appearances Coco 66 appears to be shuttered…

and something is going on next door at Coco 68. This is very curious indeed! Now factor in an email I received this evening after meeting with a wonderful group of young ladies (about matters north Brooklyn). A person we’ll call ipfreely writes:

Hi Miss Heather,

Did something happen to Coco 66? Just wondering.

Weird.

Some of the people reading this tome are undoubtedly aware this establishment has had issues with “the authorities” before. Perhaps this incident is somehow related to what happened last year? In any case, if anyone reading this tome has the 411 on what happened please share via comments or email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. You identity will remain anonymous if you so desire. Thanks!

UPDATE, July 13, 2011 3:08 p.m.: I have gotten the word from the man upstairs (that being none other than the head of the 94th himself, D.I. Hurson!) as to what happened. Here you go!

Miss Heather,  I noticed on your web page that you noticed that Coco 66 is closed. We did a joint operation Saturday with the State Liquor Authority Coco 66 was operating without a Liquor license. The owner was arrested and all the Liquor was order destroyed by the SLA.

UPDATE, July 14, 2011: Paper Magazine has a pretty good (if rather short) article as to what happened. Give it a read!

Spotted On Manhattan Avenue: Genius

Yes, gentle readers, summer is definitely upon us— and with it comes an affliction affectionately called “swamp ass”. Some lady friends and I recently discussed this condition at length and how to address it. I will not go into any details at this time but I will state that panty-liners were brought to the table. Now jump back to today; as I am running errands I am thinking to myself:

  • Wow, it is pretty damned hot outside!
  • My chest was getting, well, kind of swampy.

I had honestly never given the latter matter much thought. What I have in the way of “cleavage” is at best nominal— but this was really beginning to annoy me. It was at that moment I looked up and saw something nothing short of inspired.

As you can see the above chap has taken some napkins and crafted a sweat-catcher for his “boobs”. I’m a little disappointed I myself did not think of this first but nonetheless give this creation two enthusiastic New York Shitty thumbs up. You go, Greenpoint!

Spotted at 1011 Manhattan Avenue: Windows

After a long wait the paint is finally coming off the windows at 1011 Manhattan Avenue. Intrigued, I finally asked the folks behind this reputed coffee-shop-to-be what gives. Here’s the low-down:

  1. This establishment will serve coffee and pastries in the morning and wine, beer and “small food plates” in the evening.
  2. They plan on opening around the end of the month.
  3. The cat I spied peering out the front door recently is named “Sooti” and her sinecure as “shop cat” was merely temporary. She now resides in an air conditioned apartment upstairs!

So there have you.

Spotted At 239 Banker Street: Signs Of Life

July 12, 2011 ·

Despite its rather drab appearance Banker Street is proving to be rather lively of late. Yesterday I observed that 259 is in the process of being reverted (back) to an “eating and drinking establishment”. This is a development which undoubtedly bring its neighbors (especially those familiar with Studio B) much joy. Well folks, the fun doesn’t stop there! If the above footage (which was shot July 10th) is any indication, it would appear that someone has taken residence next door at 239 which, as some of you might recall, was vacated by the Department of Buildings almost two years ago for conditions imminently perilous to human life.

This is in and of itself quite interesting. It gets even more so when one considers:

1. A group of residents who were evacuated from this buildings have filed a class action suit to get their security deposits back.

2. The owner of this property (fairly) recently tried— and failed— to get it re-classified as residential.

To be continued…?
