Greenpoint Photos du Jour: Tooling Around The Shit Tits

Not surprisingly I have yet to get around to casting my ballot on this most auspicious day. There’s no need to worry, dear readers, I will perform my civic duty. Let’s just say I am not terribly enthusiastic about it. In fact, I whiled away a great deal of the afternoon walking around the sewage treatment plant and Blissville. If this is not a testament to how distasteful I find this year’s batch of candidates I do not what is. But I digress. Follows are a few highlights from my walk around the crappiest part of Greenpoint. Enjoy!

Something Neat: A Garden Grows In Greenpoint

October 27, 2009 ·

When the sun makes a much-needed appearance some people go to the beach or for a walk in the park. Not yours truly. Since the weather was lovely— if a little brisk— yesterday I took a little time to step out, stop and smell the roses— in the shadow of the Shit Tits. You see, on North Henry Street between Greenpoint and Meserole Avenue I stumbled upon (the remains of) something remarkable: a guerrilla garden.

garden1

Granted, this looks like a Wuthering Heights/Grey Gardensesque mass of overgrowth now but at one time it must have been quite beautiful.

garden2

Sunflowers abound.

But there are also for your delectation roses…

morning glories…

and tomatoes?!?

Speaking for myself I would NOT put anything in my body that was grown in the soil here— much less within eye (and nose) shot of the Eastern seaboard’s largest waste treatment plant. But to each their own. If you happen to find yourself in this area, dear readers, swing by and give this garden a look-see. It’s really neat!

P.S.: Be sure to see the remains of an ingenious ad hoc hydroponic set-up down the block while you’re there.

Greenpoint Video du Jour: Think Tanking

October 27, 2009 ·

Remember “Think Tanking”, the brainchild of my buddy Larry da Junkman and his cohort in crime Willie? Well, they’re hitting us with a new episode— which they purport to be their worst— in which they go to Town Square’s Pumpkinfest, muse about Manhattan Avenue cougars and pay our very own Shit Tits a visit. I was present during a great deal of the filming of this opus but alas, save one line, I found my way onto the proverbial cutting room floor. Enjoy— or not!

Shortly after this was filmed I was made aware that as of Spring 2010 the Visitor’s Center at the Newtown Creek Waste Treatment Facility will officially open and regular tours of the tits will be conducted. Perhaps when this comes to pass the guys at Think Tanking will film a follow-up episode? I can only hope so!

Greenpoint Food Watch: A Menu & A Rumor

kestanethumbToday I walked to Kestane Kebab stomach a rumbling in the hope that they had opened. No such luck. However, they do have menus available to the curious and hungry. Naturally I grabbed one. As you will see (by clicking here) it is rather extensive (it even includes seafood) and has some of the most esoteric copy I have read in a long, long time. For example, item #28, a gyro:

Layers of marinated ground meat wrapped around the large vertical split and grilled in front of an ingenious herd of charcoal fire.

Who can argue with that? In all seriousness if any of you, dear readers, has the  scoop as to when this establishment will open please share. I am very eager to try it. “Ingenious herds of fire” and all!

In other news (well, of the rumor variety) some of you might have noticed that Paloma’s old space (60 Greenpoint Avenue) is at long last getting an overhaul. The the neighborhood buzz is an Italian restaurant is going to move into this space. Hmm…

Crosstown Local Photo du Jour: Rebuttal

Remember the post I wrote last week grousing about Bloomberg inundating the G train with advertisements designed to ingratiate himself to the Latino community? Well, he got a response. En Espanol. At the Greenpoint Avenue stop of the Crosstown Local.

Translation per SpanishDict.com:

I will not vote for that bastard* Bloomberg.

*I was always under the impression the word “maricon” meant something else. While I do not condone the homophobic message that comes with using such a word, you know what they say:

It’s the thought that counts.

The cold which has been plaguing me for the last week, alas, precluded me from taking a tour of Greenpoint’s claim to fame: the digester eggs at the Newtown Creek Waste Treatment Plant. Staying home was not a decision I relished making (I really, REALLY wanted to go) but I had the presence of mind to know that what I needed today more than anything was rest. I was right: 15 hours of sleep (and plenty of hot soup) later I feel pretty good. But not as good as New York Shitty reader as frequent contributor, Tony. You see today he celebrated his birthday by taking a few of best buds to tour the tits.

He writes:

We had a great time. When we arrived at 10:20am this morning, there were already two groups of twenty that finished the tour, even though the first tour was supposed to be at 11am! They said over 300 people came on Saturday and although they anticipated doing 4 tours, they did 12. And by the time my tour ended, their were hundreds of people in line stretching back towards the gas station on Greenpoint Avenue. The tour itself was quite minimal.. first you walk closer to the digester eggs than you ever thought you would and their size is overwhelming. You go up 15 floors in an elevator and from there it’s all ooohs and ahhhs up top.

Our tour guy from the architects that built this place (Polshek Partners — Ed. Note) basically shows you all the parts of the plant and the processes, which I won’t reiterate, other than the digester eggs really are in no way a central process towards cleaning our waste, but their sheer awesome shape and scale steal the show, for now… when the entire plant is done, they plan to have an even purple night time glow over the entire plant, which is sure to be both awesome and super-creepy. The pictures I have attached that show what looks like a manhole (people looking into it) -that is a chance to see one hundred feet right into the middle of one of those sludgey digester eggs that each hold 3 million gallons of the good stuff. I’m definitely glad I chose this as my birthday celebration (!!! —Ed. Note) and appreciate those who could show up and see this shit up close and personal.

Being the generous chap Tony is he was kind enough to send me photographs (including the one gracing the beginning of this post) from his excursion. A lot of photographs. Naturally I want to share them with you, dear readers, and to this end I have assembled them into a slide slow for your delectation. Enjoy!

A big New York Shitty shout-out of gratitude goes out (again) to Tony for sharing his Digester Tank experience with us. Thanks!
