This item comes courtesy of my friends at Red Shed Community Garden. This upcoming Saturday, July 17, starting at 1:00 p.m. they will be throwing their annual barbecue and fundraiser. Live D.J.s, grilled food from local businesses (I have been told vegetarian-friendly fare will be offered!), a bake sale and plant swap are among the treats promised. In addition there will be a raffle with prizes from local businesses including:
- Knitting Factory – tickets/drinks for two
- Brooklyn Kitchen – Summertime Gift Basket
- Namaste Yoga – 5 free passes
- Blue Stove – gift certificate for a whole pie
- 3rd Ward – $75 gift certificate good towards a class
- Oslo Coffee – 2 gift cards good for 10 free drinks each
- Word Books – a copy of Fresh, Fast & Green
- Crest Hardware – garden hand tools and plant
- Rose Red and Lavender – green and purple shiso plants and a Hori knife
- Cho’s Variety – coffee
You can get more details by checking out Red Shed’s web site. I went to this event last year. It’s a lot of fun. Check it out!

Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: Call Box
I’ve been watching this beleaguered call box for some time. Every time I walk by there’s something different affixed to it. One time I even found a calculator epoxyed to it.
Yesterday it looked like nothing new had been added. But upon closer examination I discovered that, sure enough, there was!
An egg!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: More About Abate
Filed under: 11211, 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn
Remember L, the guy who was complaining about homeless people sleeping and urinating at the Abate Playground? Well, he’s back— and not the least bit happy. He writes:
Hey, so I’ve been taking pictures of the Vincent V. Abate playground for the last month to show how gross the park has become, literally the same garbage and litter has been in the same place for almost a month now and I see parks people with their little garbage sticks at the park everyday and nothing happens??? What the hell do they do when they’re there?? Here are some pics if you want to use them on your site (note, none of them are from July 4 or 5th, that seems to be the excuse all the time, “oh well these are obviously the day after such and such holiday”)
Without further ado here they are. Enjoy!

Spotted On Oak Street: Sunflowers!
If you want to see something neat (well, maybe not right now) go to Oak Street just east of West Street. There you will find two plots filled with sunflowers. They’re absolutely stunning!

Adoptable Cuties: Meet Thelma & Louise
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
These two cuties (appropriately named Thelma and Louise) were found on the stoop of the Greenpoint Veterinary Hospital recently. With them came a note from their former “person”. He (or she) simply stated he was no longer able to take care of them and he hoped they would find good homes. The latter is the purpose of this post. Follows is a little video footage of this very dynamic duo in action— with a little background info provided by the head honcho of the hospital himself: Brad. Enjoy!
Anyone who is interested in provided either of these feisty femmes a home should contact the Greenpoint Veterinary Hospital via email at: gpointvet (at) gmail (dot) com.
Thanks!
