Greenpoint Photo Du Jour: Loren
I have a confession to make: both the Mister and myself were completely taken by surprise when we encountered this: a grand opening for the newest business to grace the Garden Spot, Loren. Here’s what I have found via the Interwebs about this establishment:
The options out there for denim are, to put it mildly, many. Endless cuts, colors, washes, selvages—the prospect of navigating it all is enough to keep you in your oldest pair forever. But at his new shop, LOREN, opening tomorrow in Greenpoint, LIPS jeans designer Loren Cronk has simplified the options and is offering them all at one denim-obsessed store. LOREN is the launching pad for Cronk’s three new brands—Soldier & Brave, Melody, and BLKSMTH—each of which comprises a limited number of styles, and together run the price gamut from cheap to expensive, the better to suit anyone and everyone…
Anyone out there have anything to add? If so please share via email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com or via comments. I’d love it hear it!

THIS WEEKEND: Book Swap
Many of the people reading this are probably aware that yours truly loves to read. In fact, it has become a bit of a problem: my house is overflowing with books! I am also a big fan of anything that benefits our local library. For these reasons (and more) I feel compelled to pass along that tomorrow, July 31st, Word Books will be having a book swap! Here’s the 411 per their web site:
Hey, we know you have too many books. It’s a common problem around these parts. But you still want more books. Because books are fantastic. And also you love libraries. Whatever can you do?
You can attend our first-ever book swap this Saturday, 7/31, from noon to 4pm!
As part of the Greenpoint Business Association’s Last Saturdays of Summer promotion, we’ll be hosting a book swap outside (if weather permits; if not, we’ll take it into our basement). Here’s the deal:
- Bring up to five books
- Take up to five books
- Leave a suggested donation of $1 per book
All donated money will go directly to the Greenpoint Public Library, the better to help them when the re-open after their renovations are complete.
So spread the word! Especially amongst your friends with great book collections. If this one goes well, we will definitely have more in the future.
Book Swap
July 31, 2010 Noon – 4:00 p.m.
Word Books
126 Franklin Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222

You’ve been running some of my photos from the flickr pool for a while and I figured I should introduce myself and let you know how much I appreciate your blogging of daily eccentricities. When I moved to New York over a year ago and trying to figure out where to live, NYShitty was one of the things that brought the Garden Spot to my attention. I was drawn by the unpretentious quirkiness that I saw in your pictures and now that I’ve been living here for a while, I don’t want to live anywhere else.
For the past few months I’ve been working on a project about our local treasure, Newtown Creek, that you’ve been running photos from. I’m a photographer professionally but have been bumming around the creek out of personal curiosity and it’s great to be able to have the work in progress seen by a local audience. I’m sure you’ve seen a lot of the pictures already but I have a selection of works so far at my website.
Give Noah’s shots a look-see. They’re amazing!

Now At The Production Lounge: Body Heat
Okay, I am a little behind the game on this one (apparently the first round came to pass last weekend) but when I saw these fliers at Save Rite Wine & Liquor I simply HAD to share the good news. Exactly what is “Body Heat”, you ask? The other side of this flier should clarify matters.
You can always leave it to our friends at the Production Lounge to keep things classy in the Garden Spot!
