From The New York Shitty Inbox: A High Speed Chase On Huron?

hadn’t seen anything on your blog regarding a rather terrifying high speed police chase which took place on saturday, june 13. my roommate and a friend from out of town stepped out onto huron street at approximately 2:30 am to move their car from one side of the street to the other. when my roommate got out of the vehicle on the north side
of huron street, he was very nearly run down by a car which was going at least 70 mph, followed by police in pursuit- all GOING THE WRONG WAY UP HURON towards provost. we live between mcguinness and provost, so the driver hit a dead end at the waste treatment plant, crashed into a moving car*, and ran off. i have no idea if they managed to
apprehend anyone. but the main question is why are the police chasing someone doing 70 going the wrong way on a one way street? all involved including the police came very close to flattening my roommate and his friend. the police did not come back up the street to talk with us or to take any statements from anyone. this brush with death has left us a bit shaken, especially after the recent tragedy under similar circumstances on manhattan. what’s with all the high speed pursuits? is catching some kids who stole a van worth running over the residents? scary trend.

would be interested to hear if you know any details about this or know
what, if anything, happened to the suspect(s)…

I have to confess this is news— and very bad news at that— to me. Anyone out there know anything about this incident?

Very scary indeed!

recliner

I can think of no better way to kick off summer 2009 in the Garden Spot of the Universe than this comfy (if a bit worse for wear) recliner from Huron Street. As you can see it not only comes with a tree and sidewalk shed for shade, but is also appointed with its very own pylon. I give this piece of street seating two enthusiastic thumbs up!

TODAY: 94th Precinct Community Council Meeting

thank-you

If my inbox is any indication now the 94th has a bank robbery (of the HSBC Bank on Manhattan Avenue) and an armed robbery at Milton Street and Franklin Street on Saturday, May 16, 2009 in addition to a vehicular homicide and someone under the assumption the Abundant Life Assembly Church (as depicted above) was a drive thru confessional for stolen motor vehicles to account for. Bring your lawn chairs, popcorn and camcorders fellow Greenpointers. This will undoubtedly be a good one.

94th Precinct Community Council Meeting

This post is dedicated to Violetta Krzyzak and the loved ones she left behind. Any one of us could have found ourselves in her unfortunate shoes: being at the wrong place at the worst possible time. May she rest in peace.

UPDATE, 2:45 p.m.: I have floated my idea of having a community meeting, memorial, “rap session”— whatever you want to call it (I do not wish to sound callous, I am simply at a loss for words)— about yesterday’s “incident” prior to next month’s 94th Precinct Community Council meeting to NAG and the Greenpoint Reformed Church and it appears to be a “go”. I will relay more details here as they become known.

This rather unconventional take on double parking comes courtesy of Graham T. Beck. He writes:

Hey,

I walked out of my apartment to take a jog this afternoon, and the attached is what I saw…

According to an eye-witness, the driver of the white van was fleeing some undercover cops, doing about 100mph down Manhattan Avenue. Between India and Huron, the driver of the white van struck a young blonde woman, approximately 20 years old.

After the collision, the driver continued North along the Avenue.

At Dupont Street, the driver of the white van apparently lost control of his the vehicle and crashed into the black SUV, which was forced backwards on top of the station wagon.

The pedestrian’s condition is unknown. The driver of the white van was detained by the police.

I suspect I speak for many when I say my sincerest wishes are with the loved ones of the innocent bystander who was killed by this asshole. For those of you who are wondering, the next 94th Precinct Community Council Meeting will be on May 18th. I strongly recommend that each and every person who is outraged by this woman’s senseless death make it a point to attend.

UPDATE, 10:19 a.m., 4/28/09: The New York Daily News has written a piece about this incident. You can read it by clicking here. Streetsblog also has a great piece which you can read here.

UPDATE, 5:42 p.m.; I just received these images and commentary from Laura Hofmann.

I came home from school to learn that there had been a shootout on Nassau Ave. A car chase down Manhattan Ave. A young girl hit & killed. And three cars piled onto each other across from my building.

The captain of the 94th can stand on his head from now until doomsday and he won’t convince me that there’s no crime problem happening in Greenpoint. We’re not even half way through 2009 and Greenpoint has a long list of problems going on!

I saw your blog covering all the crappy new construction going up in the city.  Could you do a follow-up post with photos that really indicate how poorly these buildings are constructed?  I want to see dented garage doors, rust, light fixtures falling off of buildings constructed within the last 10 years.  I am no longer local to NYC but I am scavenging the internet in an attempt to gather these kind of images for a project I am working on.

Thanks

I’ll be perfectly frank: ordinarily I bristle at this kind of request. I am the editrix of New York Shitty and in that capacity I determine what gets published and when. What’s more, I am lazy. However when one lives in close proximity to Greenpoint’s favorite “nondo”, The Viridian, finding suitable material for this gentleman’s project is easy enough. Hell, I can knock that out while grabbing a gallon of milk.

viridiankitprof

First off, even I have to grudgingly concede that Magic Johnson’s funky bunch have done a pretty decent job of making the facade of this building look like it was professionally built and not knocked out by Travis the Chimp. I strongly suspect the fact that I have made light of the lack of quality workmanship on this colossus on more than one occasion probably has something to do with this development. I also imagine one (or two) of their more astute marketing professionals finally deduced that having haphazard hunks of sheet metal hanging in plain view of interested clients coming and going from their sales office may not be conducive to drumming up business. I hope whoever had this startling revelation was compensated generously for his (or her) efforts. But I digress.

Although the front end of the Viridian is looking by all accounts okay (or at least as palatable as possible) nowadays I regret to inform my new friend Richard that the “back end” of this structure (located on Huron Street), well, looks like ass.

The above photograph does not do this craptastic craftsmanship justice. Therefore I decided to shoot a little live footage. Enjoy!

Thank you Richard for putting the fire under my ass to follow-up on my affection for poorly constructed crap. Not only do I think this specimen will “jibe” wonderfully with your project but it gave me some much-needed amusement. How did this come to pass, you ask? Very simple: they’re asking $2,900 a month rent for a two bedroom in this turd.

A Girl And Her Blog

It would appear that politicians (and the developers to whom they are beholden) have done a smashing job of removing “urban blight” (READ: the working class/poor) from north Brooklyn. Who needs nuclear bombs when re-zoning, complicity and bureaucratic incompetence/apathy will do the job? Nonetheless the end product is more or less the same: a community whose quality of life has been compromised.

Follows is a revue of developer-induced blight in north Brooklyn I captured yesterday, April 5. I have entitled it After The Gold Rush.

The sad reality is re-zoning, tax bennies, and easy credit have done little to benefit my neighborhood. There were once businesses that gave people decent, well paying  jobs. Affordable rental property was once in abundance in Greenpoint as well. No more. Thanks to our city’s leadership much of my wonderful neighborhood has become a wasteland peppered by vacant lots, failed condominiums cum overpriced rental property, illegal hostels and super-sized tourist destinations operated by and for the affluent.

The time is long overdue for north Brooklyn to be developed in a manner sensitive to the needs of the people who constitute this community, not the ones Mayor Bloomberg’s rich cronies envision living here.

TO BE CONTINUED.
