As part of our grand opening celebration we’re trying to get local artists to show their eyewear related artwork. Would you be able to post our call for entries on your blog?? It would be much appreciated!! We currently serve so many local talents and want to increase our involvement with the Williamsburg art community. Hope you can help!!

Here you go, Heather!

WHERE: 291 Bedford Ave @ S. 1st St in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY.
EVENT DATE: Friday March 25th, 2011 5-9pm

ENTRY DEADLINE:
March 15th, 2011

Show your art in Williamsburg!! Do you have artwork that incorporates eyewear? Either the subject is wearing eyewear or you’ve used optical related materials in your piece? Luxeye Optical is looking for all different mediums—photography, painting, drawings, or sculpture and installation pieces.  The show will be held in congruence with our Grand Opening celebration. The event will be catered and have a DJ and a photographer on site taking pictures of our clients and models in eyewear.  Invited guest will include local Williamsburg residents as well as some optical industry people—who may be looking for commercial artwork to use in their campaigns. Luxeye Optical hopes to promote the artistic community we thrive in and bring together individuals in the name of stylish eyewear, art and fun!

Those of you who are interested in submitting images of your work can do so one of two ways: via email at luxeye1 (at) gmail (dot) com or you send a CD via snail mail to Luxeye Optical 291 Bedford Ave in Brooklyn, NY 11211. NOTE: the latter will not be returned.

Regardless of one’s stance on the “war on drugs” one really has to admire “Tim’s” market savvy product placement: an automatic teller machine located on North 7 Street at Bedford Avenue. Genius!

Greenburg Photos Du Jour: For The Love Of Big Brother

Today I took my buddy Triborough for a quick jaunt around points Green and beyond. As is usually the case, it did not disappoint.

It was at the beginning of our journey (on Noble Street) that we encountered Jerzy (AKA: the guy who lives in the pick-up truck on that toy-strewn lot on Franklin Street). He was engaged in a discussion of some importance with a fellow Garden Spotter.

Who watches the watchmen?

His jacket asks.

Me (playing tour guide):

Note how the family is giving Jerzy a wide berth of passage. This is a sign of high status in Greenpoint.

And then there was what we found towards the end of our trek. It hails form North 7 Street and makes for a strange— yet curiously appropriate— conclusion to our afternoon.

There’s a lot more going on here than initially meets the eye. This is why I carry camera with me at all times!

Jon (who sent me the above photograph) writes:

I was saddened to see this sign. I know the hood is changing but this was the first shop I went into upon moving here in 98.  First, two Duane Reade’s now this!

This is the deli that Al (and a cat named Halloween) once presided over. What will come next is anyone’s guess. A nail salon perhaps? So it goes…
