New York Shitty Day Ender: Brookland

welcomeLORESWell folks, the big day (for me, anyway) is almost upon us. Tomorrow, December 10, I will be hanging my show of photography, Brookland, at t.b.d. I picked up the prints this evening and I have to confess I was very, very pleased! But back to the purpose of this post:

A number of people have inquired if there will be a reception for my show: the answer is yes. In a manner of speaking. Here’s the deal:

I have been running myself ragged lately. This is mostly due to the fact I have been trying to balance my life and this web site with the demands of this show. I’m tired!
For this reason tomorrow, starting at 7:30 p.m., I will be having a “soft opening”. I’ll just be hanging out, talking to people who swing by, etc.
In January I will have a more proper closing reception. I will post the details about this at a later date.

Those of you who looking for free food and the like will probably want to attend the latter most. Otherwise, I hope to see you all tomorrow at t.b.d.! I have put a lot of work into this show and can’t wait to see the final product!

Brookland (a show of my photography!)
OPENING: Thursday, December 10, 2009 (I’ll be there from approximately 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.)
Closing Reception: January 7, 2010 (time t.b.a.)
t.b.d.
224 Franklin Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222

As I have mentioned before these works will be for sale and will start at  the very reasonable price of $25.00!

P.S.: Be sure to check out the reception at Clayspace too!

THIS WEEK: Holiday Market at Clayspace & More!

Print

I went to this event last year. I was not in the least bit disappointed! It was a most enjoyable evening. For this reason I strongly recommend— even if you cannot afford their wares (which are absolutely stunning)— that you go! You’ll meet some of the most talented (and downright nice) crafters and kiln cats in the Garden Spot!

Clayspace Holiday Market
Opening reception: Thursday, December 10, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Market Hours: Saturday, December 12, 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Sunday, December 13, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m.
1205 Manhattan Avenue
Brooklyn, New York 11222

To close on a related note my photography show at t.b.d. is bravely marching forward. Last night I finalized my selections, burned ’em onto cds and today I will get them developed. Truth be told, it was damned difficult to pick and choose among the several thousand photographs I have taken over the years. It was downright frustrating. In any case, I think Greenpointers, Williamsburgers, and East ‘Burgers in particular will enjoy what I picked. These works will be for sale, priced to delight and move at $25.00 and up; and if all goes to plan a portion of the proceeds will go towards some of my favorite causes:

My Neighborhood (my working title for the show, the final one is t.b.d.)
“Soft opening”: Thursday, December 10, 2009 (exact time t.b.d.)
Closing reception: (t.b.d.)
Venue: t.b.d. (Really, that’s the name of the place!)
224 Franklin Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222

When the deets become firm I will post more details.

Aside from one of the co-owners of t.b.d. and I playing dueling cameras (as seen above) it was a most enjoyable and successful FUNdraising night at t.b.d. The Greenpoint Reformed Church’s Soup Kitchen/Food Pantry garnered no less than $1,470.00 to feed our fellow Greenpointers in need.

SouperTrivia

Although I have written about this already, I feel compelled to post a reminder that this Thursday, December 3, starting at 7:00 p.m. t.b.d. will be hosting a fundraiser for a very good cause: the Greenpoint Reformed Church’s soup kitchen and food pantry! Along with an evening of trivia there will be a raffle for prizes from such establishments as Cafe Grumpy, Mousey Brown Salon, Dandelion Wine, Word Books and much, much more. Check it out!

Prizes Wanted

churchThose of you who are familiar with Greenpoint know its people, while occasionally brusque, have a lot of heart. Which brings me to the purpose of this post: yesterday I was contacted by Ann Kansfield, the co-Pastor of the Greenpoint Reformed Church, about an upcoming fundraiser she is organizing. On Thursday, December 3rd, our very own TBD will be hosting a trivia night with proceeds to benefit the Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry. Other than attending (that’s pretty much a no-brainer) here’s another way you can help: by donating prizes. A number of local businesses have already stepped up to the plate (thanks Mousey Brown, Dandelion Wine, Cafe Grumpy and anyone else I am missing!). I myself am planning on donating a piece of art work. Truth be told, the possibilities are pretty limitless.

If you too would like to lend a hand by donating a gift certificate, handicraft, or whatever your imagination can muster please contact Ms. Kansfield via email at ann (at) greenpointchurch (dot) org. Not only will it make you feel good, but you will be supporting a great cause: feeding your fellow Greenpointers!

Thanks.

Greenpoint Halloween Watch: Zombie Crawl &

As All Hallow’s Eve draws closer I feel compelled to pass along a couple of ways you can while away the evening and have a ghoulishly good time. Here they are!

Greenpoint’s very own Zombie Crawl will kick off at 8:00 p.m. at the Diamond Bar. Judging from the parade of festively fettled (and intoxicated) zombies that besieged my block last year, I’d say this is the thing to do. NOTE: there will be drink specials at each participating bar for those who are clad in zombie attire.

Just steps away from the Mark Bar, Tommy’s Tavern (AKA: “the murder bar”) will be having an evening of “blood, guts and shakin’ butts” starting at 10:00 p.m. Now I dare any of you not to get behind that!

THIS WEEKEND: Two Oktoberfests To Consider

After this post I will be signing off for awhile so as to get a little housework done before my inlaws arrive tomorrow morning. In anticipation of their visit I have been researching activities for us to enjoy. The Chile Pepper Fiesta (October 3) is a distinct possibility, Atlantic Antic (October 4) is a must-do— as are the following two items.

New York Shitty Day Ender: The Agony Of Defeat…

but not really.

Loser

My team* was eliminated in what was the lowest scoring match of the entire tourney. In other words: New York Shitty came in dead last. I am not in the least upset by this. In fact, I found it to be a tremendous relief: it meant I didn’t have to stick around for finals unless I wanted to. As I recounted to Dan the Robot Monkey Man after my ignominious defeat:

People are always fighting to be on top. I prefer being at the bottom. No one will try to take that distinction away from me. It’s mine for the keeping.

Needless to say there will be Robot Monkey footage to follow. The final round was fierce— but Brooklyn won!

*Who I want to thank wholeheartedly. You guys played a LOT better than I would have! Thanks!

Sponsors Wanted: Robot Monkey Chimpionship

FLIER

Dan, the man behind the robots writes (in regards to this post):

Guess who’s coming to Greenpoint on the 26th?!  I attached the sponsorship info if you know of any wise individuals or businesses that want to sponsor a team.  See you there, I hope.  I owe you and your man so much for helping me last time.  I’ll buy you drinks at the very least.

Mister Heather was a hero at the last event. He donated AA batteries and a screwdriver (or two) so as ensure the hilarity would proceed. And it did! We felt it was the right thing to do. It was a matter of Greenpoint pride.

And yet despite the Williamsburg Versus Greenpoint Robot Monkey Wars being heavily seeded in our favor, the Garden Spot still lost. But we did so with style, a prodigious use of profanity and an utter disregard for good sportsmanship. This made me proud. For this reason I am going to hustle the $50.00 necessary to make team NEW YORK SHITTY happen! I don’t care if we win or lose— I just want to give my good friends in Manhattan a few compelling reasons why they should stay on their side of the river.

Here’s how you, fellow Brooklynites, can too!

By clicking on the above image you should get a print quality image you can annotate and send to Dan “The Toy Man” Walker via email or snail mail. Both are indicated on the form.

See you Saturday.
