Street Trash, Revisited

In light of the recent controversy regarding the residential conversion of the Greenpoint Hospital and the fact that Halloween is just around the corner I cannot help but make mention— once again— of a very special cinematic feature which inhabits yours truly’s DVD library. I speak of none other than Street Trash. What is this Street Trash, you ask? I’ll let IMdb clue you in:

When a liquor store owner finds a case of “Viper” in his cellar, he decides to sell it to the local hobos at one dollar a bottle, unaware of its true properties. The drinks causes its consumers to melt, very messily. Two homeless lads find themselves up against the effects of the toxic brew, as well as going head to head with “Bronson” a Vietnam vet with sociopathic tendencies, and the owner of the junkyard they live in.

The premise is interesting enough. It is even more one takes into consideration that this film sports a scene from the Greenpoint Hospital (more specifically, its Outpatient Annex) and the Garden Spot itself is prominently featured! Those of you who want a glimpse as to what our ‘hood (and the surrounding area— including Maspeth) looked like circa 1897, Street Trash delivers. My favorite scene is arguably the shoplifting scene which was shot in none other than the Met Food across the street from McGolrick Park. Unfortunately I have decided it is a little too risque (READ: “language”) to post here. The trailer will have to suffice.

It would appear that someone has been thoughtful enough to upload this entire film onto YouTube for your (free!) viewing pleasure. WARNING/CAVEATS:

  1. This movie is most decidedly NOT safe for work.
  2. Some of the material in said film is quite offensive. So if you have delicate sensibilities do NOT watch it. Seriously.

Enjoy!

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part II: Closed For Renovations?

October 27, 2010 ·

The above item (which hails from the Village Voice and is a follow-up to their breaking story about the closure of Coco68 last Friday) was brought to my attention by my buddy over at Brooklyn11211. He writes:

I see they’re still closed down – but they have a perfectly logical explanation. It was just less confusing for all involved to reschedule their shows at other venues.

You can read this article in its entirety by clicking here. Otherwise I’ll leave you with yours truly’s favorite passage— with a little New York Shitty analysis thrown in for good measure!

Apologies for the confusion yesterday. Briefly: after you and I spoke we had a meeting at Coco’s and we all decided that since some shows were already moving to other venues this week, just because they were worried (rightfully so given your establishment saw fit to cram 400 people into a space allotted for 74, this can hardly be construed as “professional”), we would take this time now to take a couple days off and make some renovations to just kinda move forward and become a better venue with more space for people. So we are taking a couple days to do that. We were doing construction all night last night (I can personally attest to this. I can also attest that neither Coco66 nor Coco 68 have permits for any of the work they are doing.) , and all day today (more work without a permit, is the Department of Buildings reading this?), just in the back to have more space and do bigger and better shows (which we are not in fact legally entitled to conduct given we have neither a Cabaret License nor a Place of Assembly Permit*).

*As someone in the know explained to me:

They absolutely don’t have a cab license. Must have zoning use group 12 on the CO and the description must read “eating and drinking establishment with no restrictions on entertainment.”  Not even a PA. Hence the 74 max occupancy.

This is rather curious given the owner of Coco66 and Coco68 seems to be operating a construction company out of the latter.

One would think Mr. Kelleran would be aware legalities such as these. Hmm…

This Is Just Wrong...

Lisacat (who took the above photograph) opines:

Since when are “luxury” condo developers allowed to erect a monstrosity like this in front of their crappy buildings for the rest of us to deal with? And this photo is on a good day when it’s not spilling over and out of the fence!

While arguably superior to the Viridian’s use of Bloomberg’s trees as trash repositories I too have to wonder about the legality of this set-up. Anyone out there have the 411 on whether or not this act of space piracy is legal? If so, please share via comments or email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com.

Those of you who have been wondering what is set to grace this store front will be happy to know today I got the scoop! It is going to be a coffee shop. The wisdom of open such an establishment a mere two doors away from Cafecito Bogota remains to be seen— but I wish them luck!

LAST GASP: A Birthday Wish

October 26, 2010 ·

It does not take a rocket scientist to know times are tight for a lot of people in north Brooklyn. Even the Mister and I are feeling the pinch. But we have the presence of mind to know we are lucky. Very, VERY lucky. We have a roof over our heads; we have food (even if it means eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches went rent time comes around). We have it good. Much better than a lot of our neighbors and friends. Which brings me to the purpose of this post.

Jennifer Aull— one of the co-pastors of the Greenpoint Reformed Church and overall great gal— turns 21 tomorrow! Just kidding: she’s turning 22. Anyhoo: her birthday is tomorrow and her wish (via Facebook) is as follows:

I believe that the Greenpoint Church food pantry changes lives. I know it has changed mine. Please make a donation in honor of my birthday.

I can personally attest that the Greenpoint Food Pantry has changed lives. What’s more I want the compassionate ladies of the Greenpoint Reformed Church to continue serving our neediest! Give what you can Greenpointers. Every little bit counts!*

*Those of you who are reading and possibly wondering (mom and dad— I shit you not my parents read this— I do not come from a broken home— I come from a more or less functional and intact family) what I want for my third fifth** wedding anniversary (which will come to pass on Halloween) it is this: donate to the Greenpoint Food Pantry. You can do so by clicking here.

**Yeah, I’m in trouble.

Props go out to Chris “Smitty” Smith for putting together such a fabulous selection of stuff! Garden Spot enthusiasts in particular will be pleased to know he has a whole line of Greenpoint merch in the works including coffee mugs!

P.S.: For those of you who are wondering, the jewelry depicted in this post was made by a lady named Nina. You can check out her web site by clicking here. Not only are her wares lovely to look at, but they’re also easy on the wallet!
