REMINDER: Dog Bowl 2008

June 22, 2008 ·
Filed under: Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint Magic, Williamsburg

This is just a quick reminder that tomorrow, June 23, 2008 is Dog Habitat’s fund raiser and silent auction at The Gutter. I have been told that there are still plenty of slots available for anyone who wants to bowl at 6:00 or 8:00 p.m. but the 7:00 slot is nearly full! For those of you who are not interested in bowling, the bar will be open to the public and a silent auction will be conducted. Among the items for the bidding are “a gift basket from Dean and Deluca, spa services, an iPod nano and a whole bunch of dog-related treats and services.”

Check it out!

Once again, interested registrants should contact the organizers online via Dog Habitat’s web site and by calling or swinging by District Dog. Individuals are requested to pay $30.00, a team of two will set you back $50.00 (that’s $25,00 a person!). Also be sure to indicate which time slot you want: 6:00 – 7:00, 7:00 – 8:00 or 8:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Anyone Want To Adopt A Rat?

June 18, 2008 ·

No I am not talking about this rat (which can be found on Mott Street in Chinatown).

No, I am not talking about New York City’s ubiquitous scab busting rat either

While amusing, this Rattus Norvegicus is clearly deceased. Not a very fun pet!

I’m talking about these guys who now call Empty Cages Collective their home. Empty Cage’s Co-Founder, Lisacat, writes:

I can speak from experience, rats make awesome companions. They are affectionate, playful and very intelligent. These albino rats were going to be killed after being “used” for a semester’s class of vet tech students.

So if any of you out there want to give one of these little fellas a home (it IS the year of rat, you know) please contact Lisa at Empty Cages Collective via email at emptycagescollective (at) gmail (dot) com.

Squeak!

P.S.: The more conventional among you will be pleased to know they also have plenty of cats and kittens for adoption!

Meet Patience and Fortitude

June 13, 2008 ·
Filed under: Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint Magic, Williamsburg

These two cuties are currently hanging their respective hats at the City Reliquary. While a cool place, they would much prefer to find a new home. Maybe yours?

My tipster, Sarah, writes:

I’m writing to alert you to some Brooklyn kittens in need of a good home! Two twin kitten brothers (I have taken to the term “twittens”) are living right now at the City Reliquary on Metropolitan, and the staff is hoping to find a home for them both where they can live together… would you be at all interested in pimping them out for a good cause? They are living in the museum right now–in the dark, hot, lonely museum! I would add that it takes a good cat to live in a museum and not fuck up anything important – they totally get that.

Anyone interested in getting a little Patience or Fortitude should shoot me an email at: missheather (at) newyorkshitty (dot) com and I will forward it to the appropriate party. Be sure to give me a phone number where you can be reached. NOTE: preference will be given to people who are interested in adopting both kittens. Thanks!

For more pix of these INCREDIBLY adorable kittens click here to see the photo set City Reliquary has put up on their Flickr page. WARNING: these photographs are mind numbingly cute!

UPDATE 6/16/08: I have word these guys have been adopted. However, my friends Lisa and Eva have some ultra-adorable kittens (of all ages) for adoption. Be sure to check out Hooper. He’s a heart breaker!

Meet Tango And Honey

May 25, 2008 ·

These lovely ladies have been given a brief reprieve from the Center of Animal Care and Control’s euthanasia list in the hopes someone will give them new homes. Follow are brief bios for these two winsome cats from Eva, A fellow Greenpointer:

Tango is two years old and weighs nine pounds. She’s a very friendly, calm, cool and collected young girl. She loves to be petted. She is bright and very in tune with any human who lavishes attention upon her—which were in fact, quite a few! She had us lining up! She has been spayed by Animal Care and Control and can go home with you today.

Less is known about Honey. This sweet-faced two year old hails from the Bronx. Her owner was evicted so she ended up at the C.C.A.C. Honey currently has a mild case of the sniffles (who hasn’t given the weather of late), but she is being treated with medication and is expected to be just fine.

If anyone is interested in giving either of these felines fallen on hard times a foster or forever home they should contact Eva via email at evaprokop (at) earthlink (dot) net A.S.A.P.

Even if you cannot take Tango and Honey in, please spread the word.

I believe the character of a society should be judged not by its so-called accomplishments. Greatness be it monetarily, technologically or intellectually is not what defines a people. Rather, it is how they (or in this case, we) treat those who are unable to fend for themselves, be they two-legged or otherwise.

These two lovely animals did nothing whatsoever to deserve the fate that befell them, e.g.; ending up on a euthanasia list at an animal shelter. It was simply a matter of bad luck. They deserve better. And we should do our best to give them the quality of life they deserve.

I Am Squirrel, Hear Me Roar!

It’s Monday. For most people Monday sucks. Usually because it entails some unforeseen fuck up that happened at work over the weekend. You could settle for your boss yelling at you— or you could opt out for a much cuter option.

Meet Squirrel. This little guy’s eyes opened a few days ago. Now his mouth is compensating for it.

Now get back to work already!

Greenpoint Photos du Jour: Cute Overload On Cinco de Mayo

Filed under: Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint Magic

I came across a woman toting these ultra adorable kittens on Manhattan Avenue. She said she found them in a garage and they were headed to the vet for a check-up before going to their new homes.

This one was by far the most vocal. I am guessing he (or she) is their leader. Some may pan Greenpoint as being a dump, but I have to tell you; the Garden Spot makes them some damned cute kittens.

Greenpoint Photo du Jour: Bronx Cheer

April 22, 2008 ·
Filed under: Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint Magic

Last Sunday I swung by the site of one of my favorite feral cat colonies. True to form, a very cute tortie was there having a little lunch. I motioned for her to look up so I could get a picture of her. She looked up and I snapped away. When I got home and uploaded my photographs I made an interesting discovery.

That little minx stuck her tongue out at me!

This post is dedicated to the kind-hearted culinary genius (and fellow feline enthusiast) Jen Blossom of Last Night’s Dinner. I wish her and hers a safe move to Rhode Island. She will be missed.

Meeting Mr. Capone

April 21, 2008 ·
Filed under: Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint Magic

As I mentioned in this post, last week the Garden Spot got its newest and by far cutest citizen. He was born on Meeker Avenue April 15th, hence his name: Al Capone.

This weekend I had the pleasure of meeting this little fellow face to face.

He is quite the handful, as you will see in this YouTube clip. WARNING: this video features scenes of extreme cuteness.

Enjoy!
