Tomorrow, August 13, 2009 the folks at Impose Magazine are bringing at home by hosting an evening of storytelling entitled “It Came From Greenpoint” at Bar Matchless. The will event kick off with the debut of a new band called Field Diary. Starting at 8:00 there will be a sextet of readings by local writers— including a number of Greenpointers! Here’s the line-up:
- Rachel Shukert (Author, Have You No Shame?)
- Juliet Linderman (Editor of the Garden Spot’s very own Greenpoint Gazette!)
- Maggie Serota (freelancer, Onion A.V. Club)
- Jeremy Krinsley (Editor of Impose)
- Jason Diamond (Jason Diamond, Publisher of Impose, will read his old roommates gay romance novel involving Stephen Malkmus)
- And a “Featured Reader” who is to be announced!
Any and all Greenpointers (and Williamsburgers) looking for an inexpensive (and very entertaining) way to while away this upcoming Thursday evening will be hard-pressed to do better than this. Check it out!

Hi Miss Heather-
First of all, I love your site. I live in Greenpoint and really enjoy seeing pictures of our neighborhood (for better or worse), and you did a great job covering the shootings at the Production Lounge and Club Exit.
I wanted to send you this note about a new website I just launched. I know it’s not necessarily what you normally cover, but maybe you think it’s newsworthy since we’re based out of Greenpoint and hope to have some events at WORD or Matchless or other local places once we get some momentum.
At the very least, check it out yourself and let me know what you think.
Well, I checked it out— and despite being a non-fiction devotee (real life is much, much more interesting in my opinion)— methinks this is a wonderful way for aspiring (or established) writers in the 11222 and beyond to get their work out there. Any and all who are interested in submitting work should read Staccato’s guidelines and “About” page.

THIS WEEK: Meet “The Bountys”

This upcoming Saturday, August 15, starting at 1:00 p.m. Muddy Paws will be hosting an adoption event featuring some very special felines from none other that the Garden Spot of the Universe!
The name for this adorable quintet of kitty cuteness is “The Bountys”. I’ll let their founder/stepmom, Orange Genius, tell you their story.
The Bounty Hunter kittens were living in this big, long cast iron pipe in an industrial lot in Greenpoint. They were playing at the end when I spotted them while I was running. Since I have encountered most of the kittens I’ve rescued while running, it has been suggested to me that I take up running in a gym. On a treadmill. Nobody finds kittens on treadmills.
That’s Piper, who got her name because she would NOT come out of the pipe, peering out her front door at me when I first saw these kittens. One of her brothers cavorts on the family roof.
Four of the five Bounty Hunter kittens that were living in a cast iron pipe in an industrial lot in Greenpoint. The lot is used by film crews and members of the crew of the upcoming move “The Bounty Hunter” helped me and Lisacat get the last two holdouts out of the pipe.
It’s hot in the room where I’m keeping them, and Casidy, named after the Aniston character in the movie, is all stretched out. She’s a very pretty torbie with a patch of orange on her head.
Still dirty from the lot, Hunter experiments with a life of luxury….
Milo, top, and Bounty, bottom, were only two ounces apart in weight. But two ounces is a lot when you only weigh a little over a pound.

FOUND IN WILLIAMSBURG: Froot Loops
(in More Ways Than One)
I was recently asked by a colleague if I knew anything about the “underground” art parties that are reputedly being thrown in Williamsburg. The fact of the matter is I do not. As some of you, dear readers, might recall I am by education (and to a lesser degree, trade) an artist in my own right. During graduate school I was even a teaching fellow— but I digress. I was often asked by my fellow students if my work was the product of partaking certain mind-expanding substances. They always seemed disappointed when I gave them the honest answer: no. I was (and still am) simply strange. I mention the previous anecdotes because as I was walking around Williamsburg recently I stumbled upon something quite remarkable.
At first I thought this was your standard “Bloomieville” (homeless encampment)…
and a pretty nice one at that. It isn’t.
The first indication that something was amiss was the scattering of Froot Loops next to the mattress.
After a little poking around I found the box. (NOTECAVEAT: this and any of the following images can be seen in larger format by clicking on them. Do so at your own risk.)
Yup.
Same goes for the advertising insert on the bed.

Let this be a lesson to all you aspiring artists out there lest you decide to expand your mind and do a little creating. Sometimes it’s better to just let that Sharpie be. It is not cosmic consciousness that is powering your pen: it’s the drugs.
