Anna (who sent me the above photograph) writes:
I found the sweetest female tabby, appx. 7 months old, in Bushwick near the Morgan L stop on Sunday night. I have done everything to locate a possible owner, to no avail. I already have two cats and cannot take a third. She seems really healthy, but I also cannot afford to give her any medical care right now (blood tests, spaying, etc). I’ve tried to contact the no-kill shelters in the area, but they are either full or won’t return my calls and emails. She is presently being housed in my bathroom, but I would love to find her a real home or at least just a foster home for now. Can you either post this to your website or give me some suggestions on what to do? I’ve posted flyers, posted on craigslist, posted on facebook, posted on a few online databases, called Animal Care and Control, and don’t know what else to do.
If anyone knows who this little lady belongs to or would like to provide her a temporary— or better yet: permanent— home, please shoot Anna an email at: anna (dot) franklin (at) gmail (dot) com
Thanks!

While you’re making the acquaintance of some of north Brooklyn’s most eligible bachelors and bachelorettes (like the above the adoptable cuties) take time to savor some of the delicious vegan baked goods for sale. While you’re noshing you are benefiting a good cause! Lisacat writes:
To celebrate National Feral Cat Day, we’re having a special adoption event Saturday, October 16th from 2 to 6 pm! Yes, we’ll have our usual gang of charming and adorable cats and kittens available for adoption but we’ll also be having a vegan bake sale for the humans! Proceeds will benefit our favorite mobile spay/neuter clinic, The Toby Project!
Check it out!

To close on a (somewhat) related note, I have been noticing a lot of graffiti featuring feline subject matter hereabouts lately. Without further ado, here they are!

Could this be the start of a trend? I can only hope so. Cattitude!

P.S.: I have also gotten word that Dog Habitat has a new feline in residence. Jay writes:
Had a surprise waiting at the door early one morning. A kitten in a basket. Dropped off some time before 6:30 a.m. Young and friendly. Grey with what could be a broken tail.
Naturally I intend to meet (and film) this little guy (or girl)— STAT!

I have been hearing a lot of buzz about this, the Brooklyn Do Gooder Awards, for some time. Enough so that I feel compelled to mention it here. Having gotten that out of the way, I will get to the purpose of this post: after much careful consideration I have decided that Garden Spotters deserve their own version of this sinecure. Why, you ask? Very simple: while Greenpoint may very well be a part of Brooklyn, much of Brooklyn is most decidedly not Greenpoint. Ours is a very unique community and what constitutes a “do gooder” here may not exactly fit the criteria the folks at the Brooklyn Community Center had in mind. CASE IN POINT: one of the categories they have is “caring neighbors”. I can think of no better example of a “caring neighbor” than the person who saw fit to dismantle this pay phone. It has been (and unfortunately will probably continue to be) a problem for some time.
It is not my purpose to denigrate the efforts of people who feed our poor, educate our youth, create much-needed green spaces and/or organize our communities. They are needed. BADLY. However, not everyone has the time and/or expertise to effect such changes in our borough— but he (or she) might have a pair of bolt cutters, tube of caulk and an ax to grind! These are the people I want to hear about— from you! Here are the rules:
- I am receptive to pretty much anything. Ask yourself: Who do I think makes Greenpoint a better/special place? This is very much open to interpretation. No act and/or reason is too trivial— provided your explanation is lucid— and preferably— entertaining.
- I am also open to Greenpointers who make herculean efforts to better our community in more conventional ways, e.g.; tenant advocacy, feeding our hungry, rescuing abandoned and/or abused animals, cleaning up our community’s manifold number of environmental issues, etc.
- Other than that there are no rules. Or I will make them up as I go along because that’s the Greenpoint way!

I look forward to hearing from you,
