New York Shitty Day Ender: Scales Revisited
It was touch and go for a day or two but today I finally caught up with the brains behind the happenings at 199 Green Street: Kacy. She’s an incredibly nice lady and although her shop is still very much a work in progress (right now she is featuring cowls but plans to sell more apparel, such as shirts, in the near future), she plans to host a knitting workshop (all ages are welcome) Sunday, February 28, starting at 7:00 p.m. Check it out— or swing by and welcome her to the neighborhood!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Lose Something?
This mystery item comes courtesy of my buddy down south, Flatbush Gardener. He writes:
Today’s thaw revealed a lost treasure in a snow bank on Marlborough Road. Blog Widow and I were on the way to the subway to enjoy the day when we stumbled across (something). As I was taking the photos, a car pulled up to the light alongside us.
There were two passengers: the woman driving (WD) and a man I took to
be her father riding shotgun (FS):
WD (yelling across FS to me through the open car window): Did you get a good shot?
Me: Yes!
WD: It’s a turd, isn’t it?
Me: Um, no, it’s not.
WD: It’s a turd.
FS: It’s not a turd.
Me: No, but it’s the same vicinity.
For the reveal click here. Go ahead. You will not be disappointed!
I want to take a moment to thank Flatbush Gardener for bringing this lovely find to my attention. Believe it or not, it brings back a very fond memory for yours truly. You see, a long time ago I lived not too far from where this chap calls home. One summer day I was walking to McDonald Avenue and I found a most curious item: a brass picture frame with a couple of Polaroids in it. These were affixed to a rather greasy-looking piece of cardboard. I quickly deduced the “subject” of said photos had at one time accompanied them. It was nowhere to be found. That’s when I came to the realization Prospect Park South was way more hoppin’ than I ever imagined.

(Or at least proof)
The ‘Burgificaction’ of McCarren Park pisses me off in a big, BIG way. I was reminded of this yesterday. So as to clear up any confusion as to the provenance of the McCarren Park Pool I offer you this: an article from the August 1, 1936 edition of the New York Times. Our city’s ostensible newspaper of record.
Political bosses in Brooklyn are a dime a dozen. History (thankfully) forgets most of them— but not theĀ “Prince of Garden Spot of The World” AKA: Peter J. McGuinness! A well known (if reviled) thoroughfare hereabouts bears his name. If it wasn’t for Mr. McGuinness’s chicanery, political savvy* and charm Williamsburgers wouldn’t have a pool in which to party (or piss).
In, I repeat,

P.S.: How can you not love a guy who says this (about a brief sojourn in “the south”):
I don’t like that Jim Crow they got or their goddam white crow either.
*His career survived the Seabury hearings.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Cat & Kitten Adoption Event Tomorrow!
This item was brought to my attention by a lady named Lindsay. She writes:
Hi Heather,
I enjoy reading your blog and was wondering if you could post the following event. My boyfriend is hosting an Empty Cages kitty adoption event at his tattoo shop.
I have known the gentleman who started Empty Cages Collective for some time. He’s a great guy and is very dedicated to the welfare of animals be they furry or otherwise. Even if you are not in the position to adopt a pet do swing by 8 of Swords and give some adoptable cuties a little love— or make a donation so Empty Cages can keep up the good work!
