New York Shitty Day Starter: Alas, Saint Nick…
I knew him well.
When I encountered this, Santa Claus in a shopping cart, on Driggs Avenue I had to take a photograph of it. The porter of said building was as perplexed and amused as I was. He encouraged me to take St. Nick home. I told him taking Santa home in a shopping cart would be a schlep to Greenpoint.
Perhaps Santa’s new sleigh could be pulled by rats or stray cats?
I suggested. He laughed. And we both agreed the holidays suck.

One year ago you were a newbie; now you’re a titan of the Brooklyn blogosphere. Mazel tov! Your take on the neighborhood I care not to sully with my presence is a breath of fresh (and cynical) air. I look forward to hearing more from (and about you) in the future! Now that the Crosstown Local blights your ‘hood maybe you’ll come up and see me some time?

P.S.: The Mister (a faithful reader of FIPS) has developed a fixation on “Prospect Park West” ever since Smartmom railed (incoherently) against it. Any chance you could help me get an autographed copy of this book? I’d like to give it to him for Christmas.
LAST GASP: Community Pride is Contagious
First came the infamous bench/newspaper stand/tree protector at 1071 Manhattan Avenue. This has been since retrofitted with a more comfy back rest.
Then 1074 Manhattan Avenue stepped up to the plate with “El Blablazo”. This tree pit now sports a wind chime!
And today my buddy Laura (who took the following photograph) advised me that 1086 Manhattan Avenue has joined the fray!
She writes:

I for one am touched how the folks of north Greenpoint have (literally) taken matters into their own hands. It just goes to show that one need not rely upon “community groups” or the Parks Department to make a difference. Community pride is the new black: it never goes out of style.
Ingenuity, moxie and elbow grease; that’s the north Greenpoint way. It’s your neighborhood folks: make it yours before someone else decides to make it for you.
FAIL.
