From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Very Special Reader Request

A woman we’ll call “J” writes:

Miss Heather, Great postings on the NewYorkShitty website! My mother and uncle were born 70+ years ago in Greenpoint and spent most of their childhood on the 3rd floor of 147 North 7th Street. Next time you are in that area, would you please be so kind as to take a picture of that building now? That would be such a great surprise for them! Most appreciated…

we dialogued a bit and “J” added:

They also went to the Russian Orthodox church on N 12th… I know it (147 N0rth 7 Street— Ed. Note) will be nothing as they remembered. I could not find any pics on realtor sites (the building sold in 2010 for $990,000) or Google, so my fingers are crossed!!!

I’ll be perfectly honest: when I headed down North 7 Street I my heart sank. Especially when I figured out the infamous “finger” building (which, as many recall, was truncated from 20 stories to 10) graced the block in question:

But 147 North 7th Street still stands— albeit in the shadow of its rather “big” friend.

Here it is!

And the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration is (still) splendid as always!

This post is for you and yours, “J”!

LAST GASP: 94th Precinct Community Council Meeting & Community Board 1’s Parks Subcommittee Meeting

Both are set to happen the evening of October 11th! Am I the only person who would like to see greater coordination/communication between our Community Board, the Police Department and other community “groups”  so as to prevent overlaps like this? Why should we Greenpointers be forced to, for example, pick and choose between learning more about the tragic (and I suspect preventable) suicide which came to pass at McGolrick Park and what’s on Community Board 1 Parks Subcommittee’s agenda (which happens to be pretty Garden Spot-centric):

1. Presentation on Improvements/Renovation for Cooper Park – by Mr Martin Maher, Chief of Staff/Brooklyn – Parks Department, and Ms. Portia Cook-Dyrenforth, Capital Projects, Brooklyn – Parks Department
2. Proposed Green Thumb Interim Use For 59 Java Street – by Mr. Jack Hammer, NYC HPD.
3. Pathways of McCarren Park – Project status discussion.

In any case, make/take your choice, Greenburgers:

Reader Contribution du Jour: San Cono

October 9, 2011 ·

My friend and neighbor, Sam Sanseverino, is the current president of Saint Cono American Society in Brooklyn, New York. Located on Richardson street, aka San Cono Strada, in Williamsburg. The shrine at the late Nancy Capobianco’s home, which includes the hall in back the house, is an enduring, living legacy to love of family and faith. The hall serves as a meeting place for its members to gather and share with each other. Recently one of their projects was to restore the statue of Saint Cono at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

Nancy Capobianco, who passed away this year was a friend of mine that I had the pleasure of knowing for many years. I would come to her house to do her hair when she was no longer able to come see me at my salon. She was a warm, wonderful lady who I miss greatly. The eldest society member is a 91 year old woman named Rose. Some members are as young as their 40’s.

There was a period in the 70’s where membership and participation dwindled. In 1988 the quonset hut hall was erected behind Nancy’s house and it has been an active place for meetings, suppers, and casual gatherings for the community that shares this common bond of a love and reverence for Saint Cono.

One of their next goals is to get the exterior of the hall painted.

History:
Saint Cono, an obscure saint from the hilltown of Teggiano, near Salerno. Legend says that Cono was born with a cone shaped head, a symbol of the Trinity. He wanted to become a monk which was against his mother’s wishes that he marry a nice Italian girl and have some kids. Finally, she relented when she found Cono praying in a burning bread oven, unharmed by the heat and flames.

Emigrants from Teggiano went to Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The small Italian community that still lives in the middle of Hipsterville, USA celebrates Saint Cono as a last remaining thread to Teggiano. Richardson Street between Lorimer and Union has the official second name “San Cono Strada” because his unofficial shrine remains there, in a private residence.
