Spotted On McGuinness Boulevard: Missing Ghostbike
Many of you are no doubt familiar with the senseless death of Solange Raulson. For those of you who are not, she was struck and killed by a truck at the intersection of Nassau Avenue and McGuinness Boulevard December 13, 2009. Many questions have arisen about how this tragic event came to pass and how it is being handled by the N.Y.P.D. Most remain unanswered. But two things can be asserted with 100% certainty: she died too young and is missed by many.
ghostbikes.org erected a memorial at this intersection (which you see at left) to serve as a reminder of Ms. Raulston’s life— and death. Now jump forward to today: as I was running errands I made an interesting discovery.
This item has gone MIA. I find this curious as the other memorials at this intersection were untouched. Does anyone have the 411 regarding what happened here? If so, please share via comments or contact me email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com.
Thanks!

Okay, I’ll admit these above imagery does not do this vehicle justice (try taking photos from a moving bus— it is not as easy as you may think). The OCD manifest here is compelling nonetheless. Note they Holstein print seat covers, fuzzy dice, assortment of beanie babies (black and white all) and the maneki neko. NICE.

Chez Shitty Critter Watch: He’s BAAAAACK!
(Again)
The non-cat the Mister and I call “Rocky Raccoon” made an unexpected appearance last night— or more accurately— this morning. 5:15 a.m. to be precise. The ruckus was enough to wake the Mister. This is no small achievement. I write this as someone who some experience in this matter. Needless to say when he called me into the bedroom and I noticed all the felines staring out the window with rapt interest I knew I had clearly missed out on something very special.
Inasmuch as I can ascertain (I had the presence of mind to grab the Maglite but not my camera) Rocky was whaling on some fellow varmint. The shrill utterances I heard would certainly indicate this. Needless to say I will investigate/document this matter later. IN DAYLIGHT.
Otherwise, I was disappointed “Rocky” didn’t feast on the shit-filled diaper outside our bedroom window. It’s been there for two months. I guess Rocky has developed more effete tastes.

New York Shitty Day Ender: Scales Revisited
It was touch and go for a day or two but today I finally caught up with the brains behind the happenings at 199 Green Street: Kacy. She’s an incredibly nice lady and although her shop is still very much a work in progress (right now she is featuring cowls but plans to sell more apparel, such as shirts, in the near future), she plans to host a knitting workshop (all ages are welcome) Sunday, February 28, starting at 7:00 p.m. Check it out— or swing by and welcome her to the neighborhood!

(Or at least proof)
The ‘Burgificaction’ of McCarren Park pisses me off in a big, BIG way. I was reminded of this yesterday. So as to clear up any confusion as to the provenance of the McCarren Park Pool I offer you this: an article from the August 1, 1936 edition of the New York Times. Our city’s ostensible newspaper of record.
Political bosses in Brooklyn are a dime a dozen. History (thankfully) forgets most of them— but not theĀ “Prince of Garden Spot of The World” AKA: Peter J. McGuinness! A well known (if reviled) thoroughfare hereabouts bears his name. If it wasn’t for Mr. McGuinness’s chicanery, political savvy* and charm Williamsburgers wouldn’t have a pool in which to party (or piss).
In, I repeat,

P.S.: How can you not love a guy who says this (about a brief sojourn in “the south”):
I don’t like that Jim Crow they got or their goddam white crow either.
*His career survived the Seabury hearings.
