Found On Calyer Street: True Confession

If the above building looks familiar to you, here is why: I learned it was owned by my landlord after he had been shut down by the Department of Buildings, discovered this web site and elected to telephone me. Needless to say this was a bit awkward. But not as awkward as, say, having seventy pounds of fetid laundry in your apartment. Although I miss the purple aluminum siding, perhaps it “died” for a good cause? I suspect this person’s neighbors or roommates would say so. In closing I would like to advise the person responsible for this tome that am going to print out a copy of this and give it to my landlord lest he is need of anyone who is “good with a hammer”. His name is Nick lest you want to put his name on your dirty clothing.

New York Shitty Day Ender: Has Anyone Seen Sunny?

This flier comes courtesy of my buddy Diana, who writes:

Hi Heather,

I spotted this on Calyer near Guernsey and thought you might want to post it, he looks like a sweet cat and his owners seem heartbroken.

If you have seen Sunny or know of his whereabouts please contact his “people” at the above-listed telephone number. He is clearly missed!

Spotted In Greenpoint: More Hate

Hi Miss Heather,

I hope you are well.
I recall you once did a story on this. I found that sticker again, on a stop sign at the corner of Calyer and Newel.
I alerted 311 and the police, but I still found it up there when I biked by there 5 hours later.

As I have written before, these stickers are produced and distributed by a recognized hate group. If you happen upon one please report it to the police. STAT. In closing, here’s another such sticker I found recently on Manhattan Avenue.

Disgusting.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Another Hit & Run?

It would appear that in the wee hours of Sunday morning a Greenpointer was the victim of a hit and run on Calyer Street between Newel and McGuinness Boulevard. The good news is the victim is alive, if in critical condition. The bad news is this is yet another example of how out of control speeding is around McGuinness Boulevard. You can read the whole sad story by clicking here.

My wishes go out to Mr. Chamberlain and his loved ones. May he make a complete recovery and the party responsible for this reprehensible act be brought to justice.

Miss Heather

P.S.: Special thanks goes out to Caryn Rose for bringing this to my attention.

UPDATE, 6:36 p.m.: Here is an email I have received regarding this incident. Anonymous writes:

My sister witnessed that hit and run. Or rather, her cab driver saw it all. She was heading back to NYC and said that it was a white car and the guy was pretty bad. They got out of the car and she said he was unconscious and bleeding from the head but that he was still breathing. They called 911 and flagged down a passing cop car… She said the cops were rather dismissive and said that the victim was drunk- they could smell it. She said “how do you know that? I  had wine tonight!”…. I guess that if the victim is drunk that means he deserves to be mowed down!!… She said they didn’t seem interested in taking down names or statements either…. There is an outdoor surveillance camera outside the fabric store next to Dough de Damas. I wonder if the cops even checked that out???
– I am furious at the attitude of the cops.!!!

The Calyer Street Bike Bandit Strikes Again!

Remember the reader email I posted on January 25 about a fellow Greenpointer having not one, BUT TWO, bicycles stolen last weekend? Well, it would appear they have struck again. Per my Calyer Street tipster:

i don’t know who’s letting them in, so it has to be delivery something, or someone who works for the landlady.

i am having my brother in law put the new lock in TOMORROW.

First off, I want to tender my sincerest sympathies to my Calyer Street compadre. Knowing that a thief has been in your apartment building is disturbing enough. The fact he (or she, I suppose) had the chutzpah to come back— or worse—- someone else has taken to pillaging on your private property is even worse! While I realize this may be cold comfort to this individual, I want to reiterate that the 94th Precinct is registering bicycles. This service is totally free and will make tracking down your ride much easier in the event (god forbid) it is stolen. You can get the contact information for the woman spearheading this effort by clicking here (look at the second to last paragraph).

When I see something such as this it brings a smile to my face. This is not to suggest I take what has happened in Haiti lightly, I don’t. Rather, the above flier is proof positive that my fellow Greenpointers have huge hearts. If you want to make a difference you can make a donation to the Red Cross by clicking here or you can attend the fundraiser at t.b.d, Souper Trivia Night 2, this upcoming Thursday, January 28. For the full rundown regarding the latter click here.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Bike Buffet?

January 25, 2010 ·

Think your wheels are safe and sound if they’re in your apartment building? Think again. A Calyer Street tipster writes:

Two bicycles stolen over the weekend, including my partner’s. They did not take all the bikes, just the ones that were used the most and therefore easiest to get to. did not even take the most expensive bikes… It’s been five years that we’ve lived here and have never had to lock the bikes. It was definitely a crime of opportunity but it’s terrible – my partner and the other guy whose bike was stolen USED their bikes almost every day. everyone else whose bike was shoved in the corner rarely rides, even if their bikes were more expensive.

now i’m just worried that the thieves will come back and help themselves to the bike buffet. and i want another lock on my door.

Let this be a warning to you, my Williamspoint bicycle enthusiasts. Play it safe: be hypervigilant about keeping the entrance of your apartment building locked at all times. Better yet, keep your bicycle in your apartment. Better to suffer a little inconvenience than discover your bike has gone for a ride without you!
