Attached you’ll find a pic of our lovely new park at the end west end of Greenpoint Ave.  I have no idea what this park is called, so I can’t be more specific but I’m pretty sure you know the park pictured.  I’m sure you’ll also note that the gate to this public park is padlocked and that the sun is still shining. What you might not know is that this gate has been padlocked for three days straight with no notice as to why.  I have been by this park with my lovely canine companion Kenneth twice a day for the last three days – morning around 6:30 and evening around 6:30 and never has it been accessible.  Is there something I don’t know about the park schedule that would cause it to be closed?  Also, if it should in fact be open, do you have any idea who I should complain to?  I called 311, but as I mentioned this park is not marked with any name from without and the 311 operator had no record of a park at the location so did not know who to call.  I filed a general complaint.  Is this something I can send on to our assemblyman friend?  Thoughts?  As this is pretty much the only unpaved park in my area, it’s pretty friggin annoying that I can’t get into it.

This public space is called WNYC Transmitter Interim Park— or something to that effect. Of course this information is not of much use if the 311 operator has no idea this park (if you can call it that) exists. But I’ll leave the semantics and philosophical stuff to the city. Here are four people/entities I would recommend T contact about this (or any other neighborhood) problem (in order of relevance):

I hope this has been helpful, T!

UPDATE, March 18, 2010; T has some exciting news to relay! He/she writes:

I am extremely pleased to report some actual good news on this.  This morning, as a result of my 311 call, the District Manager responsible for this park called me back.  We were both on cell phones so I did not 100% catch his name but I believe it was Harmon or Carmen.  First, how’s that for promptness?!?  Awesome!  Second, he was not only beyond polite but also clearly interested in this and concerned.  We spoke for about ten minutes, the result being that he had already spoken to the employee responsible for that park who reported he had been closing it at 5:15 every day.  Harmon/Carmen explained to me that their employees are still on winter hours and that within a month, as dusk officially becomes 7 or 8 o’clock, they will switch to summer hours.

I feel it’s important to commend our public servants in this or at least note that everything functioned exactly as it should in this case.  There was the kind of promptness, concern, respect and knowledge on display that should characterize every interaction between citizens and the city apparatus.

Thanks Harmon/Carmen!!

I didn’t have my camera with me when I was out today, but I thought I’d give you a heads-up on something rather amusing.  If you take a stroll over to Eckford Street and Greenpoint Avenue, you’ll notice that the construction fence around the vacant lot on the southwest corner has been replaced by a nice chain link number.  You’ll also notice that this new fencing affords a superb view of two tall, yellow, black-tongued denizens of our fair neighborhood.
I nailed them to the inside of the construction fence about a year and a half ago, but moved out of the adjacent property shortly thereafter and figured that the next tenant had removed them.  Now that the fence is gone, I can see that my replacements were lazy, not all that handy, or blessed with a decent sense of humor.  In any event, I’m glad to see my pets looking healthy.

Naturally I headed down the aforementioned intersection without delay.

The creatures of which C wrote were not at all difficult to locate.

Genuine Greenpoint giraffes!

A big New York Shitty shout-out of gratitude goes out to C for tipping me off to this. It made my day! Well, after the Bushwick bunnies.

Tonight the Mister, I and a good friend finally got around to trying out the Garden Spot’s newest dining establishment: Paulie Gee’s. The first thing that struck me was how vegetarian friendly the menu (which you can see by clicking here) was. Truth be told, it was difficult to make a choice— but choose I did: I opted for the Marianna and an arugula salad.

Make that two arugula salads. As it would happen the waitress had noted we had debated as to whether purchase one or two. They had an extra one so they gave it to us. Both were dispatched pretty quickly. Then came a surprise from Mr. Gee himself:

The first working model of the “Miss Heather Special” a little culinary joint venture we have been working on. We dug in.

And dug in. It should be noted that the Mister ate his entire pie: the Kuban.*

And DUG IN.

All in all we had a great time and my Marianna pie was garlicky and delicious. A glass of wine would have been a nice accompaniment, but Paulie assured me they were anticipating their liquor license in a week or so.

As for what will constitute a “Miss Heather Special”?  That’s for me to know and you to find out! I am more than certain Paulie will come up with something fantastic! In the meantime, check it out! You will not be disappointed.

Remember the melee in front of Club Exit I made mention of last November?

If not, no worries. This should bring you up to speed:

This was first brought to my attention by someone whose son is a friend of a someone involved, e.g.; via the Greenpoint grapevine. By that I mean the friend (of the son of my tipster) in question was allegedly beaten up by the police and went to the hospital. Per my tipster the fight started over a woman being harassed. Her son’s friend tried to intervene and police officers were knocking cameras out of the hands of bystanders. And busting heads.

This was brought to the attention of D. I. Fulton at the 94th Precinct Community Council Meeting on November 21. A Greenpoint citizen called it a brawl.

Mr. Fulton begged to differ.

It took awhile but a video documenting this incident has finally surfaced. Here it is.

And here is a description of what you have just seen per my tipster:

This video isn’t clear, but I’m familiar with some of the voices, since they are friends of my son. The video starts with my son’s friend K—- laying on the ground, handcuffed & unconscious. His friend A——, who is handcuffed, is yelling in the background to tell the police that his friend isn’t moving and in need of an ambulance. One of their friends D—– begins to video the scene. An officer pushes D—– with the video phone but the girl quickly regains control of the video phone and keeps running the video. Another girl M——, is screaming in the background and trying to get to K—- to see if he’s ok. (K—- is the kid that had his teeth knocked out by guys at Club Exit who were bothering one of the girls.) As you can see, the officers grab the unconscious K—- by the arms and drag him to a police car, not an ambulance. You can hear his friends calling out to the officers about getting an ambulance… None of the white Club Exit patrons were arrested, even though one of them knocked out K—–‘s teeth.

Kind of makes you happy Club Exit’s (ostensible) swan song was last night, yes?
