(Or, 239 Banker Street Revisited)
Today on a lark I decided to swing by 239 Banker Street (formerly known as the Sweater Factory Lofts) to see what’s shaking. I was not disappointed.
After I shot the above photograph a gaggle of hipsters took notice and stopped. One of them (who I would presume to be their leader) initiated contact:
I’m guessing you broke that glass because the landlord ripped you off?
I turned around, pointed to the plywood gracing the entrance and replied:
Like I would live in a place like this? I don’t think so.
There was a pregnant pause and then my new friend told me about how the former tenants of this building were ordered out of the building, screwed out of their security deposits and so on and so forth. Although I know of all of this already I listened attentively as he gave me the whole run-down. After he concluded his speech out rolled the corker: he was one of the tenants vacated from this building! There is undoubtedly a life lesson to be had here, dear readers. I will leave it to you to ascertain what it is. But I digress.
When this gent finished his tale of woe I brought it to his attention that he and his neighbors were not the only people Max and his funky bunch owe money to:
(Insert punchline here.)

P.S.: In (somewhat) related news it would appear that someone has egged the entrance to the Pencil Factory Lofts.
From The New York Shitty Inbox: Wish Fulfillment
Many of you recall that Socrates Diner closed its doors several months ago. There has been much speculation as to why this came to pass. Truth be told I am just as in the dark as you are. However, I can state with 100% certainly what is going to take its place. Brace yourself for some very good news!
Jay writes:
From the sign in the window it looks like Socrates restaurant will soon become Bombay Garden. Glad to see an Indian restaurant but sorry to goodbye to the ol’ Greek place.
Yours truly (who has wanted an Indian restaurant in Greenpoint for some time) had to see this with her own eyes. To this end I headed to 651 Manhattan Avenue without delay. Sure enough, he was right.
What’s more, when I walked by they were busy at work!

I have no idea when Bombay Palace will opens its doors. However, I did get an E.T.A. for another restaurant-to-be in the Garden Spot.
Per a worker, Vamos al Tequila* will be opening in roughly three weeks!

THIS WEEKEND: Spring Fever
This item comes courtesy of the folks at Gallery 106 who write in their press release:
Spring is the season of rejuvenation. Urges repressed through the long winter months roar to the surface, adding vigor and passion to otherwise ordinary lives. Spring sees bulky winter coats replaced with skirts and sleeveless shirts, handshakes replaced with kisses, and S.A.D. replaced by L’amour Fou. This show is a celebration of new found optimism, invigoration, and desire.

Yesterday, dear readers, a very special item arrived in yours trulys inbox: an email from a person who lives in none other than the Viridian! I always thought the outside was pretty damned bad. If the following is any indication, the interior isn’t any better.

This blog post writes itself… This is the sign on the ‘tranquility pool’ thing that became a garden. And this sign showed up a few days after they finished with the garden.
Maybe it should’ve started with ‘Listen up you nasty ingrates.’

hey miss heather,
sad that this is my first instinct when this happens, but someone fired a gun (from the stoop of my building, as far as i can tell, regretting that first floor apartment now) on india between franklin and manhattan, maybe half hour, 40 min ago. actually an admirably rapid response from both uniformed and plainclothes cops, though i imagine following the whole quaalude thing they’re out in greater numbers.
the boyfriend and i heard arguing on our stoop, as i went to get my glasses heard lots of “you’re drunk, calm down” followed by “NO GUNS NO KNIVES MAN! NO GUNS, HANDS UP”. as my ass was already on the way to the floor around that time and when the guy fired, i didn’t see what happened, but saw lights and heard cops within about 2 minutes. they ran towards manhattan ave and a few min later led a guy back in cuffs. they’re still hanging around talking to folks.
so, yeah, yikes. looking forward to hearing what in holy hell this was all about.
You and me both. I can only hope the peeps at 200 Franklin Street enjoyed their box seats for this shit show. Yeesh.
