From The New York Shitty Inbox: What’s Up At 16 Eckford Street?
I have received a number of questions about the above establishment. Most of them run more or less as follows:
Hi- I wanted to point out this new gym I passed over the weekend. Is this the local gym scammer? Not sure as I saw actual equipment in the place. Wanted to call the new establishment to your attention, as you tend to know all things Greenpoint.
In light of what happened at Cutting Edge Fitness I too have been very curious about this establishment. Today I decided to swing by and see what gives.
Gym Source was on the scene.
And men were very busy at work. Including Quick Fitness’s General Manager and Personal Trainer, Michael Losardo. He was kind enough to talk to me for a few minutes. Follows is a general rundown of our conversation:
- Mr. Losardo’s former career was being a recruiter. He was unhappy so he made a career change. He is now a personal trainer and the General Manager of Quick Fitness.
- He has been queried by a number of people about his establishment. He understood they were understandably cautious given some of the scams that have come to pass in North Brooklyn.
- Quick Fitness is to some degree a joint venture between Mr. Losardo and the building’s owner (whose name eludes me at the moment). The latter has invested heavily in converting this formerly industrial space into a fitness center.
In other words, Quick Fitness (inasmuch as I can ascertain) 100% legit. In fact, a number of people have already signed up for memberships. Those of you who are wondering (and I am certain you are) the peeps at Quick Fitness, while offering one year memberships, understand a lot of people (in light of our uncertain job market) are not able or willing to make this kind of obligation. For this reason they are waiving membership fees and offer month by month memberships. In other words: there are no contracts to sign. The monthly fee to join Quick Fitness is pretty reasonable too as well: $65.00 a month. Other amenties this establishment will be offering is onsite day care Mondays – Fridays 1:00 -4:00 p.m., Yoga, Spinning, Kickboxing classes, “Mommy & Me” classes and much, much more.
Those of you who are interested in learning more about Quick Fitness should consult their web site. Oh yeah, they’re set to open June 1st!

Quicklink: A Visit To Carino
I have yet to try out the Southside’s newest Mexican restaurant (and brainchild of the former staff of Bonita): Carino. I was reminded of this this morning by NYC Food Guy who brought a video of his recent visit to this establishment to my attention. While I can’t honestly say I am too excited about chorizo (I’m a vegetarian), I know a number of you undoubtedly will be. So without further ado here it is. Enjoy!

The Curious Case Of 651 Metropolitan Avenue
Ever since the fence gracing this derelict site became a searing shade of pink it has been a source of curiousity (and grudging admiration) to yours truly. In fact, I have made it a point to check in on it periodically. Not that much has really happened, mind you. Over the winter the fence’s vibrant hue became weathered and, well, it was looking more than a little worse for wear.* Last month it finally collapsed.
My buddy at Queens Crap even texted me:
Hot pink fence @metro & leonard now has grass skirt doors!
That’s when things started to get interesting.
Really interesting.
This was the sight which awaited me when I strolled by yesterday afternoon.
It was understandably a source of much curiosity. This kind of thing happens when people become acclimatized to looking at eyesores like this derelict lot. Every day.
And my curiosity finally got the better of me: I asked the woman watering this nascent garden what gives. Here’s what she had to say:
- She is responsible for this (interrupted) fence’s pinkness.
- When the middle section collapsed she erected the reed cordons you see above… and contacted the owner of this property to propose planting a garden on his property. She made sure to send photos of her handiwork.
- Not only did he approve of this endeavor— but he requested she give the fence a fresh coat of paint!
Only in Williamsburg would an all too common case of Bloomblight blossom— replete with Pepto Bismol colored paint! In closing, here are a couple shots from Rose Red & Lavender. As I understand it they are peeps behind these plants.
