From The New York Shitty Inbox: Dog Habitat Gets A Very Special Caller

spooky

I recently bumped into Rob Maher one of the minds behind Unleash Brooklyn and Dog Habitat. He told me about something really neat which happened recently. It involves the above lass. Her name is Spooky and this is her story:

Spooky found us. No, really! She walked up the stairs and sat on our front door just before the temperature dropped this fall. She is about six months old. She is extremely friendly, but in need of some personal attention and lots of love.

Anyone interested in learning more about this street smart Greenpoint girlie— or wants to make your home Spooky’s permanent haunt— please shoot the guys (and gals) of Dog Habitat an email at: rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org. They can also be reached via telephone at: (347) 601-8678.

Thanks!

Yes, it would appear the much talked about 7-11 is back on track in Greenpoint. Do these men have the legal right to gut this property? It depends on how you look at it. The property (still) has a standing Stop Work Order per the Department of Buildings.

SWO

Yet the Department of Buildings, in their esoteric wisdom, has seen fit to issue a permit to make this space a “convenience store”. Because, you know, what Greenpoint needs more of is “convenience stores” at the intersection of Greenpoint and Manhattan Avenue.

Will Argonaut Inc. confine their “alterations” to the interior? I can only hope so. This building is, after all (and once again) as Brooklyn11211 pointed out: located in a landmark district. What’s more, I think it’s rather nifty.

Hopeful, but not optimistic.

Some of you might recall last year I met the man behind the woman who crafts 85 Calyer Street’s marvelous Halloween displays. His name is Tony and every October 31st he fires up his defanged chainsaw for the enjoyment of children of all ages. I can hardly wait!

dobbindog

This dapper dog can be found on Dobbin Street and struck me as the perfect way to kick off an announcement for a very nifty upcoming event at Unleash Brooklyn: Looking for Calvin and Hobbes by Nevin Martell. Here’s the 411 as gleaned from Unleash Brooklyn’s Facebook announcement:

In honor of October being Adopt-A-Dog Month, Saturday, October 24 Unleash: Brooklyn and Word Books will be hosting an evening featuring Nevin Martell, author of the newly released book, Looking for Calvin and Hobbes: The Unconventional Story of Bill Watterson and His Revolutionary Comic Strip… Come celebrate the friendship between mankind and their furry friends while learning about the elusive creator of one of the most beloved comic strips of all time. Looking for Calvin and Hobbes is an affectionate and revealing book about uncovering the story behind this most uncommon trio – a man, a boy and his tiger.

Reader Comment Du Jour: Advice For Someone DOB’d From The Sweater Factory Lofts?

239bankerMost folks (myself included) would consider the evacuation of 239 Banker Street to be yesterday’s news. However, when the following comment came to my attention today I simply had to post it here.  Action writes:

The vacate happened 3 days before I was supposed to move in. I’m working with Brooklyn Civil Court to start the process to get my money back. Does anyone know of alternative routes to take? Maybe a class action case?

I do not profess to be an attorney (or even playing one on t.v.). Although I have some tenant-landlord court experience Action’s problem is way off my radar. Does anyone have some advice or thoughts for Action? If so please leave them in the comments. Thanks!
