Jesus and Graffiti: Mott Haven Bronx

Of this (which hails from Mott Haven) Carnade writes:

Louis wanted to show me the wall that was upset with and protesting, because of the use of satanic symbols. He was nice enough to show me around his part of the Bronx, an area I need to spend more time in.

Great shot!

Props go out to Subway Art Blog for spotting this gem. He writes:

What could possibly drive two aspiring actresses to start interviewing strangers in the subway? Sheer curiosity.

Why Are You on My Train? is a video blog by Alli Goldberg and Jen Jamula. Both of them moved to New York to pursue their acting careers after graduating from Yale’s theater department, but found themselves doing something they never expected. “Our blog was partly born out of riding the subway to and from auditions and a) wondering who the people were around us and b) wanting to engage,” explained Jen…

You can read the rest over at Subway Art Blog. Check it out!

In the meantime here’s a choice morsel:

I can only hope I meet these ladies and tell them my tales. Provided of course the G train is actually running.

Happy Feral Cat Day!

Kitty Empire 4

Jesse writes:

Thank you for covering feral cats (and domestic cats), as well as doing posts about TNR workshops.  I’m writing to see if you’d consider doing a post for National Feral Cat Day (on very short notice – it’s 10/16!) to raise awareness about feral cats and what people can do to help.

Every neighborhood in NYC has feral cats and most people innocently feed them, not knowing you can do anything else to help out these feline underdogs. But they can – through Trap-Neuter-Return! Our website with general information is here. And the workshops, including one on 10/16, are listed here.

We’re always willing to provide feral cat content at any time, National Feral Cat Day or not, so please keep us in mind!

Duly blogged!

Discovered On The Interwebs: Krackoon

July 24, 2010 ·
Filed under: BAD ASS, Bronx, New York City

When I saw these pictures by Mohdi* on Flickr I simply had to know what the deal was. As many of you are well aware, I have had the occasional encounter with these critters. I spied a url, www.krackoon.com so I typed and clicked. Here’s what this film is about per their “about” page:

…The Bronx is facing a new problem. The over development of our waterfronts has forced animals such as raccoons, skunks and possums to invade neighborhoods like Locust Point in search of food and shelter which has been denied by the raising of these structures. Unknown to anyone, a crack addicted raccoon with a craving for blood enters the town of Locust Point adding a new dimension to the growing problem. Along the way, we are introduced to a cast of characters out of a demented Norman Rockwell painting, people you have a hard time warming up to, the real monsters in this story…

My advice: check out the second trailer, it’s hilarious.

Or better yet: check out it this upcoming Tuesday, July 27 at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival!

Spotted On McGuinness Boulevard: Bklyn Hydro Garden

May 18, 2010 ·
Filed under: 11222, Bronx, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

When I spied this on McGuinness Boulevard it gave me pause. Could this be the beginning of the greening of McGuinness Boulevard? If the wares inside are indication, I’d say it is a distinct possibility. I didn’t have time to check this place out (was headed to lunch). I will do so when the time affords itself. In addition, my green thumb (if one can call it that) is limited solely to jade plants. I see no reason to inflict my incompetence on innocent plant life. Those of you who are more horticulturally adept, however, might want to give this new establishment a whirl. It looks really neat!

When I ran a Google search for 316 McGuinness this came up. Most intriguing.

Last Gasp: Remember to Vote Tomorrow!

Did you know Mike Bloomberg is running for mayor? If the numerous fliers and callers/hipster hitters of buzzers didn’t remind you of this fact maybe my answering machine (and inbox) will!

Just 24 more hours, dear readers, and it will be over.

RightRides

RRlogoYesterday upon learning the horrible news about the rape which came to pass at Nassau Avenue and Diamond Street earlier this week I posted it here on New York Shitty to make you, dear readers, aware. Later in the day I was reminded (by buddy d of pointgreen) of a service unescorted women (and many more— as I learned) out late at night can and should use. It is called RightRides and I am going to dedicate this post to giving you the 411 about this organization.

To get the ball rolling, here’s an excerpt from their “About” page to give you a general idea of their mission:

The mission of RightRides For Women’s Safety, Inc. is to build safer communities by ending gender-based harassment and sexual assault. We work towards this by community organizing and offering direct service, safety education and advocacy programs.

In our RightRides program, we offer women, LGBTQ and gender nonconforming individuals a free, late-night ride home to ensure their safe commute to or through high-risk areas.

In our Safe Walk program, we offer walking escorts for any one who doesn’t want to walk alone.

We are also a founding member of New Yorkers for Safe Transit, which will pursue coalition building and policy change work to increase safety in mass transit…

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Very simple: if you are out and about Friday and/or Saturday night (11:59 p.m. – 3:00 a.m.) and am in need of a safe ride (or escort) home you call either of these two telephone numbers

  • (718) 964-7781
  • (888) 215-7233 (SAFE)

and they will dispatch a driver to pick you up. CAVEAT/POSSIBLE CATCH: your person and destination must be within their “service area”. Follow are their service maps for Friday and Saturday.

New York Shitty Photo Du Jour: Greetings From The Bronx

September 22, 2009 ·
Filed under: 11222, Bronx, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

As I have mentioned previously my brother in law is currently staying with us. Since he is only here for four days we have a jam-packed itinerary. Today the Mister took him to Lomzynianka Restaurant for some blue chip Polish vittles. They were provided a little post-meal entertainment in the manner of a crazy lady screaming at no one in particular on Manhattan Avenue. If the previous is not THE quintessential Greenpoint experience I honestly don’t know what is. But I digress.

Yesterday’s destination on our gustatory tour de force of the outer boroughs was Morris Park. After we gorged ourselves on ungodly amounts of Italian food at Patricia’s we went for a little walk. It was at the intersection of Lydig and Crueger Avenue that we stumbled upon this.

fucku

I cannot decipher the bottom half of this missive but I do not think it diminishes the author’s message in any way. The first five letters pretty much say it all.
