Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: Connie O’s Gets A Makeover

After I took the above photographs noting Connie O’s new look a woman approached. She opened the conversation as follows:

My sister owns this bar. You’re not going to sue her or anything, are you?

Me:

Oh no, I just noticed your new sign. I really like it.

Lady: “Oh. Get those photos in a magazine, okay?”

Regrettably I cannot make this woman’s wish a reality— but I can tell you I have heard good buzz about this establishment. Apparently the beer there is among the cheapest to be found in the neighborhood!

UPDATE, July 11, 2010: A rather ugly incident at this establishment has been brought to my attention via comments.

(Or, A Greenpoint Gets A Healthy Spill*)

This latest installment of mayhem from the Garden Spot comes from a gentleman named Todd. He writes:

Apparently there was a giant fish oil spill on Franklin and Greenpoint last night resulting in car accidents, people slipping and tripping, and other various keystone cops/laurel and hardy type LOLZ.  Do you know anything about this? …A friend witnessed it but did not take pictures.  She did however talk to a cop at the scene, asking ‘why don’t you just close off the intersection?’  The response was ‘lack of manpower’.  I guess you need the National Guard to set up for wooden horses to close off an intersection.

This is news to me. Anyone out there have the 411 about this? If so, please share via comments or send me an email at missheather (at) newyorkshitty (dot) com.

Thanks!

If my inbox is any indication it would appear yesterday’s, um, excitement was not limited to McCarren Park and the Greenpoint Public Library. Dale (who sent me the above photogrpah) writes July 7, 2010:

And this is what the B62 looks like when it does. Yep 11pm tonight.

I wonder what this was about?

Some of you might recall that in May I took a tour of the basement at the old Outpatient Annex at the Greenpoint Hospital. It was being rehabilitated and an inaugural art exhibition was planned for the space. Well folks, this is it! Not only do they have a curated show of artwork by north Brooklyn artists for our delectation but three evenings of live performances to boot! You can peruse a full itinerary of the opening festivities by clicking here. Check it out!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Bomb Scare?

July 7, 2010 ·
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

This is proving to be a very interesting day. First it was a dead body being retrieved from McCarren Park this morning and now I have gotten word there has been a bomb scare at— get this—  the Greenpoint Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. Some of you might recall this building is currently closed for renovations. Here’s what my tipster had to say via text (after I inquired “Are You Serious?”):

Yes. Tons of police. People are saying that they found “something”. But that’s all I got.

It goes without saying that if anyone has more information about this please share via comments or email at: missheather (at) newyorkshitty (dot) com.

Sheesh…

UPDATE, 7:22 p.m.: We have a confirmation/corroboration. Anonymous writes:

I live on the block by the Greenpoint branch of the Brooklyn library, and I can confirm at least the reports of a bomb scare. They have been there for about two hours at least; we walked by there going to dinner and then by the time we got back, they had cordoned off several more blocks. One cop told me the same thing as the person who texted you (that there was “something”) and also encouraged me to ske-daddle; but my boyfriend got more info from the other cop. He said it was some kind of device and they were dealing with it, and that it was a bomb scare.

UPDATE, 10:12 p.m.: And at last we may very well have the lowdown. It is, well, rather Greenpointesque. Anonymous the Second writes:

I… was one of the people who couldn’t get back into my building. We were told by one of the detectives (who was very friendly and seemed to be very chill) that the thing they found was a black bag, containing 2 large polish beer bottles with a suspicious straw connecting the two….a kind of straw that is not usual in a situation like that (not sure what that can mean) but with no timing device. Because of it being a post 9-11 world, they had to treat the package like they would a bomb. The detective seemed to encourage refrain from telling the whole world to keep pranksters from getting any ideas.

I wonder what the make and model of this ‘ordinance’ would happen to be? My educated guess: Zywiec. 24 Ounces.

UPDATE, July 8, 7:20 p.m.: The “bomb” has been identified! You can read about it here.

This handsome little man was brought to my attention by our new vet, Brad. Pancakes along with his siblings, which seem to have found a foster home, were found at construction site. He is three months old, sports lovely (and long) black coat and has a clean bill of health! If you would like to give this dapper chap (with a fabulous name) the loving home he deserves please contact his good Samaritan via email at: greenpointkitties (at) gmail (dot) com.

You can see more pictures of Pancakes and his crew by clicking here. WARNING/CAVEAT: do not watch the bathtub video if you averse to extreme cuteness!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Death At McCarren?

The details on this item are scant (as you will see) but here they are. A person we’ll call OK writes:

This am, around 8 or so, cops had a corpse in a body bag waiting for it to be picked up. They were at the usual spot where the drunks / zombies hang out (on the lorimer side).

I’m guessing we’re looking at a case of heat exposure/alcohol poisoning here— but who knows? If what I observed walking around the neighborhood is any indication, the police have been quite busy. If you have the 411 about what happened please share via comments or email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com.

Thanks!
