Mark You Calendars: Newtown Creek Environmental Benefits Progress Meeting

I have no doubt there will be many questions asked at this meeting. If I may take the liberty of suggesting one, it is as follows:

Why did I have to find out the Greenpoint Boathouse (“Boatel”) was relocated from a blog?

New York Shitty Street Art Du Jour: The Word On The Street

I am taking the glass half-full approach to this one: at least they have managed to place a fence around these premises. This is a very welcome development compared to what I saw back in January. Well done, Mr. Richard!

Closing on the subject (of Paul Richard), as luck (?) would have it I stumbled upon another piece of his handiwork on the Northside. It had been, how shall we say, “modified”. Whether or not this was done willfully and deliberately has been the subject of debate at Chez Shitty this evening. I contend it was not. The Mister contends that while the person responsible (and I can assure you this was the handiwork of a human being) may not have “planned” to do this, he/she did take placement under consideration. He opined— and I quote:

This was a crime of opportunity.

WARNING/CAVEAT:

  1. This is not for those with weak stomachs.
  2. Once you this is seen, it cannot be unseen.

Without further ado, here it is…

Those of you who wish to see this in person go to North 11th Street. It is on the sidewalk across the street from “The Whiskey” (on the premises of the Brooklyn Brewery, if my memory serves me correctly). I suppose it goes without saying: watch where you walk!

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part III: E-Waste Recycling (& Raffle)

EWasteRecycling

This comes courtesy of Artineh Havan, who heads the Grand Street Business Improvement District. She writes:

Dear Miss Heather,

I hope that you are well.  We would greatly appreciate it if you could include a public service announcement about our electronics recycling event (in partnership with the Lower East Side Ecology Center) on Grand Street between Graham Avenue and Humboldt Street this Saturday, April 5th from 10 am to 4 pm, rain or shine.

As you know, if put in the trash, these items end up in landfills, leaching toxins into our ground water.

A list of acceptable working and nonworking electronics is below or here:

• Computers (laptops & desktops, servers, mainframes)
• Monitors
• Printers, scanners, fax-machines, copiers
• Network devices (routers, hubs, modems, etc.)
• Peripherals (keyboards, mice, cables, cords, chargers, etc.)
• Tablets and E-readers
• Components (hard drives, CD-ROMs, circuit boards, power supplies, etc.)
• TVs, VCRs, DVRs, & DVD Players
• Digital Converter Boxes, Cable/Satellite Receivers
• Portable music players
• Audio-visual equipment
• Video-games
• Cell phones, pagers, PDAs
• Telecommunication (phones, answering machines, etc.)

In addition, participants can be entered into a raffle to win a MacBook Air courtesy of TekServe.

Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Done!
