Fedders Friday: A Very Special Gift
I recently received an email from Ann Kansfield of the Greenpoint Reformed Church. It read as follows:
I have an awesome gift for you that I found this morning. Are you around today that I might be able to get it to you?
Unfortunately I was sick and told her to wait. Then she emailed me the following irresistible teaser:
No worries – take your time and feel better. To help you along in your healing process, or at least make you smile… can I tell you what I found for you? — it’s a tin Fedders sign. You can hang it on your wall and feel all cool and kitsch. If you don’t like it, you won’t hurt my feelings.
Needless to say I headed down there the next day without delay. FEVER be damned!
She even left it out front for me.
I’ve had this beauty in my apartment for a couple days now. It has become my muse, so to speak. Yesterday I had an epiphany. A vision of Fedderism so glorious I will not divulge it at this time. It will take some time and a lot of planning. The latter of which I am not especially adept at. But take my word for it: when it comes to pass it will be good.
In the meantime this select item will hang above my laundry hamper next to my framed letter from Jim McGreevey.

The Loneliest Stooge: Curly
This week when I swung by Empty Cages Collective I was both pleased and disappointed to learn that Curly’s partners in crime, Moe and Larry, have been adopted to good homes. I could tell he was lonely so I removed him from solitary confinement and gave him some much-needed t.l.c. He was all purrs until I tried to put him back. That’s when he decided to pay his upstairs neighbors a little visit…
and ends up getting a little more than he bargained for!

Great Moments In Flier Making: Any Means Necessary

While I have to admit that I personally find flier distributors to be annoying 99% of the time I have to give this man (who also does odd jobs, by the way) credit for his marketing strategy. I would never, ever in a million years think of using Malcolm X as a resume tool. What’s more I doubt Mr. X (had he been alive today) would either.

Presenting Santorini

I have been long overdue announcing (what could very well be) some good news on the north Brooklyn restaurant front: the opening of an honest-to-god Greek restaurant! Curious(ly optimistic) I went inside to take a look.
They have done an absolutely beautiful job of renovating this space.
I briefly spoke to the restaurant’s owner, a very nice lady named Maria Douralas (who can been seen above at the left). She explained to me that she named her restaurant Santorini as that is where her father hails from (for the record, her mother was from Naxos). She asked me if I knew anything about Greek food. To wit I replied:
You bet your ass I do. I’ve lived in Astoria.
We both had a good laugh over that one.
Of particular interest to your truly is they are offering scordalia. A veritable garlic lover’s delight. Imagine if you will hummus— on steroids —and you pretty much get the idea. This is probably not the best item to order on a date but that doesn’t really matter much to me: I’m married.
At this time Santorini is a cash-only establishment. I imagine this will change once they get their credit card related business in order. You can peruse their eat-in menu and specials by clicking here and here. Their takeout menu can be seen by clicking here.

UPDATE 11/14/08: I tried out some of their appetizers. They’re pricier than Astoria… but GOOD! As was the service and overall “atmosphere” as well!
Tomorrow: RAW Release Afterparty

The Williamsburg Gallery Association is ready to unleash RAW: Williamsburg Art Spaces, the 2009 Williamsburg gallery and culture guide.
The event, co-presented by the WGA’s partner, Pernod Absinthe, will feature an Art Exhibition/Fundraiser with artwork by area artists and the RAW “Art Fight”—DJ Corey Tut will delight listening ears, while local visual artists duel on stage creating live art. The fabulous “Basic Black” will MC the fight!
Outside the venue, area urban street artists will remake the façade of Sugarland. The art exhibition and the completed “Art Fight” artwork and Urban Guerilla Street Art will be auctioned off to support the artists and the WGA.
Galleries will be open tomorrow, Friday, November 14 from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. Afterward there will be an afterparty. Complimentary absinthe “libations” will be available from 10:00 – 11:00 p.m. and Sugarland (where the above installation can be seen for one night only!) will be hosting a “Coney Island style” burlesque performance by the “infamous Bambi the Mermaid”.

A Rocknapping In East Williamsburg?
A couple of months ago my buddy Kevin Walsh over at Forgotten-NY shot me an interesting email. It read as follows:
At Morgan Ave. a bit north of Rock St you will find a huge rock, about 5 feet tall. Apparently this is the rock that Rock Street is named for.
I mention this anecdote because when I walked by last weekend I noticed something amiss. Namely, no rock.
After I took the above photograph a woman entering an adjacent apartment building noted it was a beautiful day to take pictures. I asked her if she knew what happened to the rock which once graced this spot. She said she honestly had not noticed it was gone. This of course poses a few questions:
- Why was this rock removed?
- When was this rock removed?
- HOW was this rock removed?
I seriously doubt it was hauled off and sold for scrap (although I suppose anything is possible nowadays). Thoughts anyone?

A Year In The Life Of Lee Fisher, Part 2: Summer In The City

For those of you who have not been following I recently acquired a penny diary dating from 1917 that belonged to one Lee Fisher who hailed from Grand Street. From the best I can deduce he worked in a dry goods store on the Lower East Side (and seemed not to like it very much). In this installment (which covers early May through August) he does his best to beat the heat by checking out Central Park, sleeping on the roof, doing a little a lot of bathing in Coney and taking a vacation. Enjoy!
May 30, 1917
No work to day. “Decoration Day”. Walked thru Central Park with Belle. Visited Aunt Sherry at Hospital, Saw movies at night with B. Came home. To bed.
