New York Shitty Day Starter: F*ck Football, Give Me Pussy!

Today is one of my favorite days of the year: Super Bowl Sunday. No, I’m not preparing copious amounts of crap food and securing large quantities of beer to consume while “watching the game”. I like Super Bowl Sunday because a great many people are engaged in the aforementioned activities and I can walk the streets of my fair neighborhood in solitude. I like my “alone time”.

I also like cats. If you like cats and don’t particularly care about football why not swing by PS9 tomorrow and meet a few of north Brooklyn’s finest felines?

Today from 12:30 – 5:30 p.m. Greenpoint’s very own Empty Cages Collective will be hosting an adoption event there!

Cat & Kitten Adoption Event
February 7, 2010 from 12:30 – 5:30 p.m.
PS9 Pet Supply

In closing, last night I had the pleasure of accompanying a good buddy of mine to meet a trio of very winsome Bronx kittens who were rescued from a kill shelter on New Year’s Eve.

Meet Taittinger…

and his brother Dom. As you can see it’s almost impossible to tell the difference between them!

They are very curious kittens…

and for this reason they, along with their sis Cristal (as seen above), were almost impossible to film!

Especially when she claimed my Kittycam as her own!

Until Taittinger took an interest in a bowl of pistachios. The Mister encouraged this behavior (hey, for once he wasn’t encouraging cats to trash our living room) and well, the rest is what it is…

Faster pussycat! Kill! Kill!

Anyone interested in adopting Dom, Tate or Cristal should contact the ladies of North Brooklyn Cats via flickr by clicking here and/or here.

New York Shitty Day Ender: The Greenpoint Coffee House Is Officially Closing…

February 6, 2010 ·
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

and SOON! This item comes from Chris Ruen, a staffer of the (VERY) soon-to-be gone and much-loved Greenpoint institution writes:

Dear Greenpoint,

After seven short years, the Greenpoint Coffee House will meet its maker this Monday, February 8th, at approximately 5pm.

The hours for our final two days of service:

Sunday – 10 to 5:30, kitchen open from 10:30 to 5

Monday – 8 to 4:30, kitchen open from 8 to 4

False rumors of the GPCH’s demise have regularly swept through the quiet alleys of west Greenpoint. One rumor would not die, that our lease was denied renewal by the building’s landlord. While we hoped to remain in business until the end of March, it became unadvisable, if not impossible, given the normal difficulties of operation mixed with the added turbulence of unwinding such an establishment. And suddenly, here we are.

A true community has called the corner of Franklin and Green “home.” For this group, including owners Louise and Brian, the many staff members past and present, and our beloved regulars throughout the years, this is a lamentable moment. An era will end on Monday and memories of the Greenpoint Coffee House will live on, on their own anomalous terms.

Sorry for the immediacy of it all. We hope those who wish to say goodbye will have the chance to enter the space one last time, ready to celebrate whatever the place has meant to them. An official party of some kind will (hopefully) be planned, so stay tuned.

Take Care.

Chris Ruen (staff)

on behalf of the GPCH

I suspect I speak on the behalf of many when I write that I have many fond memories of the Greenpoint Coffee House (foremost among them this). As any (relatively) “old-timer” will attest, this establishment provided quality coffee and grub to west Greenpointers long before Franklin became “cool”. I’ll be paying my respects, how about you?

Greenpoint Coffee House
Closing Monday, February 8, 2010 at 4:30 p.m.
195 Franklin Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222

In closing I want to wish this establishment’s owners, Louise and Brian, and their staff the best of luck in their future endeavors. You will be missed!

Laura (who forwarded me the above photographs) writes:

I thought you’d like these.

The sky is gorgeous tonight. I decided to go up to the roof to take some photos. Good thing I went upstairs. I didn’t know we had a guest. The guest evidently went through the trouble of cleaning the landing, folding the blanket and tucking their pillow under the head of the faux bed. I hope my first impression of the guest is correct. I don’t want to have to evict anyone in this cold. Needless to say, (but I’ll say it anyway) N. Greenpoint IS seeing an increase in homelessness.

Agreed.

The above photograph was taken this evening at our local McDonald’s.

As some of you have probably noticed I have not been inclined to write much of late. Sometimes the material and/or inspiration is simply not there. Even I have to take a break every now and then— especially after writing my first Op-Ed for another publication! Last month I completed a piece (ostensibly) about Community Boards for an organization called Transportation Alternatives. I am pleased to announce this has, figuratively speaking, “hit the stands”.

This material is not on Transportation Alternatives’s web site. However, the peeps at T.A. were kind enough to send me a couple of copies. I have scanned the article and uploaded it. You can read it by clicking here.

Enjoy!

Adoptable Cuties: Meet Annie, Oliver & Nicole

February 4, 2010 ·
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

Today was a trying one for yours truly. The general pattern (if in fact there was one) seemed to be people trying to get on my nerves. A number of them succeeded in this endeavor beyond their wildest expectations. This is no small achievement. Inasmuch as I talk a good game the fact of the matter is I am a peace-loving individual. Life (READ: being a former civil servant) has taught me patience— even if it is derived from the “give them enough rope” school of thought— is a virtue. It is for the aforementioned reason that after receiving a salvo of abuse from a particularly nasty individual I was amused when she tried to storm out of the junk shop in a self-righteous huff —only to discover she couldn’t figure out how to open the door. It is such small vindications in life that make it worth living.

Another thing that makes yours truly’s life tolerable on days such as this are fur kids. Now that I think about it I have one that has mastered the art of opening doors. Perhaps he could give the aforementioned person some pointers? But I digress. Needless to say after the previous fiasco  I was very excited to swing by Dog Habitat and make the acquaintance of some lovely adoptable cuties in need of loving, permanent homes. Who cannot help but smile when meeting Annie, Oliver and Nicole? As you will see!

ANNIE & OLIVER

These two 17 weeks old Shih Tzus were recently turned over to Dog Habitat because their owner lost his job and experienced a family emergency. In other words, he was not in a position to take care of them and elected to do the right— if emotionally painful— thing: place them for adoption. It was “nap time” when I swung by today so Annie and Oliver were in rather subdued (but very cute) form. Here’s a video of them in (in)action while Jay tells us their story.

NICOLE

Conversely, this young (1 year old-ish) lass was very eager to get out of her (admittedly luxe) accommodations and get some lovins! I’ll let Jay take it from here.

Anyone interested in making the acquaintance of Annie, Oliver, Nicole or any of the other lovely, loving companions* Dog Habitat has for adoption should contact them via telephone at (347) 601-8678 or via email at: rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org. In closing, I’d like to mention that next week the guys (and ladies) of Dog Habitat/Unleash Brooklyn will be having a fundraiser with a distinctly Valentine’s Day twist:

Check it out!

As you can see Waldemar has not only winterized his shelter for the local ferals, but he did so with his own hallmark style! How could we possibly expect anything less?
