New York Shitty Day Ender: From The Unofficial Community Board 1 Yahoo Group
Filed under: 11211, 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn
I have on occasion made mention of the unofficial Community Board 1 Yahoo Group. This is because it is a wonderful way to learn about what is going on in our neighborhood be it upcoming Community Board (and subcommittee) meetings; local events, fund raisers and the like. Conversely, it is an excellent forum to posit questions and/or complaints about matters as mundane as, say, illegal truck traffic or an obstructed sidewalk. By posting your inquiry in this forum it will be brought to the attention of the group’s ~300 members. Among the previous are our elected officials, members of the Community Board proper, Police department(s the 90th and 94th Precinct to name a few), etc. And believe you me when I write this: these people are paying attention! The previous having been written I would like you, kind readers, to envision yours truly shooting a mouthful of claret out of her delightfully robust nose (and all over her lap) when she stumbled upon the following item this evening:
Clearly this is no longer your mother’s— or your grandmother’s— unofficial Community Board 1 Yahoo group! Those of you who wish to participate in the above “party” can and should join the Community Board 1 Yahoo group post haste because, as the above missive clearly states, this is a limited time offer! Who knows, you might learn a thing or two about what is going on in north Brooklyn and want to get involved in the process. And I for one think civic-mindedness is very sexy indeed!
UPDATE, 11:45 p.m.: Wait ladies, you have another chance!
I will not divulge the exact place this party is going down (because I think people should have the right to enjoy such stuff) but I will mention it is (per Google) .1 mile (and a 911 call) away from the 90th Precinct.

Spotted On McGuinness Boulevard: Imperialism

Given the spate of rather nasty weather lately yours truly has been spending a great deal of time indoors. Today when the temperature reached a downright balmy 38 degrees I decided to take a little stroll down McGuinness Boulevard. I had a very pleasurable excursion until I reached the intersection of Java Street. This is where I found myself standing in slack-jawed amazement at the following.
Why do the people responsible for this crap think mimicking the Death Star somehow denotes “class”?
I mumbled to myself. Then I proceeded to cross the street so as to take a closer look. That’s when I learned that the above edifice may very well have the same expansionist designs, “Manifest Destiny” if you will, as espoused by Darth Vader, et. al.
Why can I not shake the image of a python unhinging its jaws and slurping down a rather large and unhappy mammal— or perhaps a spider injecting some digestive substance into its victim and waiting for it to rot from within— when I behold the above grotesque? Needless to say I will be watching with rapt interest to see how the guys at 285-303 McGuinness Boulevard (which has racked up a rather impressive number of complaints and a Partial Stop Work Order) will work around this little problem. My prognostication is as follows: if they fuck with their diminutive neighbor’s satellite television it will be war. Provided of course it hasn’t escalated to that level already.
In any case (and to close), I suspect no one will be surprised to know this edifice (which I have christened “The Anacondo”) springs forth from the G-E-N-I-U-S, north Brooklyn’s good friend and Greenpoint’s gift that keeps on giving … (drumroll, please)
Bobby Scarano, stand up please!

P.S.: Anyone care to place bets as to when Fox News/Murdoch’s Tuskin Raiders send a television crew out to document this atrocity? They point and click in single file (to my web site) to hide their numbers!

This horrific story might hopefully remind some people how hard “illegals” work.
I got a peek inside this factory last May with my friend Sam. The workers could not have been nicer, despite the language gap. They even gave my friend Sam a free package of Tortillas after rightfully making fun of his bad Spanish.
My thoughts go out to the family and friends of Juan.

A few thoughts/observations about this missive (which I spied this afternoon while walking down the Champs-Élysées of north Brooklyn) and the person who created it:
- This chap is obviously very unhappy at the prospect of having a 200 bed homeless intake center for single men near his home.
- How do I know this, you ask? Well, in addition to the above missive I have met him at one of the Town Hall meetings regarding the aforementioned shelter.
- During our conversation I also learned he was responsible for this, which is just plain awesome.
- This gentleman is 75 maybe 80 years old if a day. In addition, I came away from the previously-mentioned conversation with the distinct impression his politics lean most decidedly to the right. Thus I am rather surprised— and in a very good way, I’ll add— that he knows what Village Voice is, much less be bothered to take a copy home to read or annotate.
I suppose it just goes to show that the Garden Spot— and the people contained therein— still have a few surprises up their respective sleeves! God bless you, Greenpoint Greenpernt!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Monitor Street (de)Construction
Jay (who sent me the above item) writes:
These flyers were distributed to all residents on Monitor St between Nassau and Norman. I’m just a renter so only got to hear about the plan from my landlord. There was an all-block meeting a couple of days ago and it sounds like the people who own property on this block are going to fight this all the way to city hall. I can’t imagine why the city would want to go through with this… if 5 feet of sidewalk are added on each side then the sidewalks will be wider than the street!
Here’s the deal: I do not profess to have any knowledge whatsoever about this kind of thing. However, this does strike me as being a wee bit ridiculous. Follows are two more avenues the folks on Monitor Street should consider:
In closing, I would like it to be known that I have dialogued— albeit via email— with Ms. Nieves on a number of occasions. She is not only very dedicated to addressing the manifold number of transportation issues hereabouts but she’s a really nice lady to boot! Do not hesitate to contact her.
UPDATE, 10:30 a.m.: Jay has been kind enough to provide some visual aids so as to help us understand what is being proposed.
UPDATE, 11:39 a.m.: Here’s what our Transportation whiz, Karen Nieves, has to say!
Dear (excised),
Thank you for your email concerning the Nassau Ave/Monitor Street reconstruction project. At my last CB#1 Transportation Community Meeting many of your neighbors attended and has shared your concerns. We are working with Assemblyman Joseph Lentol’s office to get a meeting with NYC Department of Design and Construction(DDC) to go over everyone’s concerns for sometime in February.
Please understand this Capital Improvement Project has been in planning stages for many years and the Community Board is not in charge of the project. We are only advisory and try and mitigate the concerns of the community during the process.
Although the Community Board does support Infrastructure Improvements in our community we do not support lack of outreach in which clearly DDC has not provided in your case.
Please be assured we will do everything we can to have all your voices heard and try to get a meeting together with the appropriate agencies as soon as possible.
In the meantime if you have any questions please contact Mr. Shane O’jar (718) 391-2358 at the NYC Department of Design & Construction regarding this project .
