Williamsburg Photos Du Jour: Separated At Barf?

When I was an undergraduate in art school my teachers frequently pestered me for not signing my work. I didn’t engage in this practice for two reasons:

  1. Over the years it had come to my attention that the size/elaborateness of the signature on a piece of art work was inversely related to the quality of said work.
  2. I had the presence of mind to know that 10-15 years down the line I would be appalled by my student work and destroy it. (And that is exactly what came to pass.)

Which brings me to this.

I’m not in a particular chatty mood today but I couldn’t resist passing along these baby shit-hued beauties from the ‘burg. I fear this trend of going green (albeit via stucco) might be gaining momentum. Inasmuch as it pains me to write this the latter may very well be the least unattractive addition to what may very be one of the ugliest blocks in Williamsburg. Meet 253 Skillman Avenue’s neighbor.

Who wouldn’t want a balcony with scenic views of this?

Ballad of Pretty Boy Floyd by Woodie Guthrie

Amusingly enough, shortly after I stumbled upon this find I encountered a (poorly attended) press conference regarding 1015A.  All the north Brooklyn notables were present: Steve Levin (he’s really short), Rami Metal, Stephanie Thayer (the Executive Director of OSA and north Brooklyn’s Parks Poobah), a member of GWAPP was present, and so on and so forth. Sadly, I missed meeting Yassky (so as to tender some of my readers career advice to him).* While they had their face time with the media here’s what I found two blocks away:

I fail to see the “logic” of 1015A. But then again, I am not lobbied, wined and dined by real estate interests. Simply put: 1015A seeks to “encourage” speculators/Bloomblighters (who have raped north Brooklyn six ways to Sunday) to “maintain” their fences in return for renewing their building permits. In true “fox guarding the hen house” tradition, the Department of Buildings will be entrusted to make sure these developers comply. Given what happened at 493 Myrtle Avenue earlier this year this is cold comfort.** In essence, the very people who are the biggest offenders to our quality of life will be rewarded for not breaking the law.

What is wrong with this picture? Does this mean if I have enough influence/lobbyists I can jaywalk whilst sipping a 40 for the next four years?

P.S.: This one’s for you, Uncle Kent.

*Whose fashion malfeasance was not unnoticed by Aaron Short. My recommendation for a Yassky makeover: Tom of Finland.

**Whose incompetence enabled a three story building to be built (and occupied) on 95 Clay Street without permits.

SUNDAY: A Fundraiser For A Very Worthy Cause

angeladogdrinksNYS

Dog people, dog lovers and McCarren Park dog run patrons take note: this Sunday, September 27, 2009 the folks of the McCarren Dog Run Association will hosting a benefit, “Drinking For Dogs”, at PS9 starting at 6:30 p.m. The purpose of this event is very simple: to raise funds for a much-needed “dig out” and improvements to the dog run’s drainage system. The McCarren Dog Run is without argument the most trafficked dog run in north Brooklyn. Ironically enough, it is also the one most in need of repair.

This is our dog run folks. We can upgrade it before the numerous condos, nondos and luxury apartments around it reach completion (thus adding many, many more users) or we can wait and watch it further deteriorate. The choice is ours. For this reason I advise any and all dog owners— especially those who use the McCarren Dog Run— they “regulars” or otherwise— to attend this event. Or at the very least make a donation. The latter can be done by clicking here.

Drinking For Dogs
September 27, 2009 starting at 6:30 p.m.
Cost: $10.00 per ticket which can be purchased by clicking here.

169 North 9 Street

Those who are interested in learning more about “Drinking For Dogs” can do so by pointing and clicking their way to the McCarren Dog Run’s Facebook announcement or by checking out their web site.

Thanks!

When I found this delightful item from Rheingold Room (entitled “Park Your TV”) not only did it give me a much needed chuckle but it also reminded me that it has been awhile since I have hit you with some of north Brooklyn’s finest street furniture. Follows is a selection of my favorite finds. Enjoy!
