Williamsburg Video Du Jour: Caption This

I found this airy studio apartment on Bedford Avenue at North 10th Street this afternoon. Anyone care to give it a snappy name and/or advertising copy? If so, please share them via comments or email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com.

LAST GASP: Help Wanted

Anonymous writes:

Hmm..so I was combing craigslist for food/beverage jobs in Williamsburg, which I periodically do when I’m feeling angry at never getting paid to write, and came across this listing which looked funny:

Commission payout averages $8.00 – $12.00 per hour. Exactly what constitutes a “commission payout”? This is beginning to stink. Big time.

Anonymous goes on to write:

That “hostel” is apparently the same as “luxury” loft rental building “The Glove Factory” on Graham Avenue.

That would certainly appear to be the case. Anonymous (who has proven him/herself to be very resourceful), goes on to ask:

Anyways, I don’t know much about “mixed-use” buildings, and maybe I’m missing something here, but can you have a part-rental/part-hostel building?  Because if I was paying those ridiculous rents, I’d be pissed that part of my building was a hotel.

Your wisdom on the matter will be greatly appreciated!

And no, I will not be applying for that job.

Well, there is no Certificate of Occupancy on file.

But this might be illuminating!

You can read it all here.

I know, you’re just as surprised as I am. In closing, I would feel remiss if I didn’t share City-Space’s description of the Glove Factory Lofts in its entirety. It’s a hoot!

The Glove Factory Luxury Lofts We welcome you take a step back into the heart of Old world Brooklyn with the latest renovated loft building- the Glove Factory. Built at the turn of the century and preserved to its original grandeur, the Glove Factory includes many of her original attributes including exposed brick, timber columns, rod iron doors and wood flooring restored beautifully as if it was built just yesterday. Once inside the lobby, you will be taken back to a much simpler time where horse drawn carriages ruled the streets and the Dodgers called Brooklyn home. Built with modern architectural elements, every apartment features an open style loft living experience including 14ft ceilings, original beams, exposed brick and century old factory doors. Each loft has its own character as not one is the same as the other. Although restored with original historical components, the lofts have been modernized for 21st century New York life. Sound proof windows, state of the art designer kitchens, contemporary living rooms and luxurious baths ensure that every convenience grants you the lifestyle you have earned. Slow down and enjoy a drink at the roof deck while embracing magnificent city views. A fully equipped gym is located conveniently in the building as is a laundry room, bike storage, stroller storage, Fresh Direct storage, business lounge, free wifi and a 24 hour Kim’s International Market.

Just like the good ol’ days when there was a servant class, horse-drawn carriages, state-of-the art kitchens, free wifi, stroller and Fresh Direct storage!

New York Shitty Day Ender: A Missed Missed Connection

When I saw this on Flickr I chuckled. When I learned from the person responsible for raising awareness about this appalling breach of etiquette that Craigslist did not see fit to publish it I was outraged. These youths need to be taught a lesson: either give props to the Dark One with gusto or don’t do it at all. The fact this came to pass on Bedford Avenue (the devil’s playground if ever there was one) makes the offense even more egregious.

F*cking amateurs.

Williamsburg Gentrification Watch: Old Glory

One would think Thor Realty Holdings (having bought an entire city block in “prime Williamsburg”) would be able to afford a better means of flying old Glory. I suppose this is not the case.

Williamsburg Degentrification Watch: Wythe Avenue

Some of you might recall 242 Wythe Avenue (as seen above) is the former site of the sales office of the 80 Metropolitan Avenue “Star Quality” luxury condominiums (better known to locals as a living tombstone to landmarks preservation process and a cynical attempt at PR spin). Yesterday I found myself at this very location. And in so doing unwittingly stumbled upon the nexus of a culture war of the highest Billyburg caliber (READ: sullen utterances of revolt scribed using sidewalk chalk and paint pen).

This is the item which first caught my eye. It hails from the far left side of the building just above the call box. One does not see a semi colon used nowadays. This is because most people do not know how to use them properly. My heartfelt kudos go out to the grammar teacher who taught this person the correct way to connect an independent clause with an elliptical clause.

Now our intrepid chalkster (or chalkstreuse) has pointed out a potential pedestrian hazard. The natives are indeed getting restless!

The missive to the left reads “Shafer”. I have no idea what this means. The inscription to the right, however, is all too recognizable.

Of course, every opinion has its counterpart— and in post real estate boom Williamsburg they are conveniently located! In this case, next door.

Speaking as someone who has a MFA (and five figures of debt to go with it) I cannot help but wonder where the author of this missive is coming from.

Nevermind.

Coming To Bedford Avenue: Duane Reade

The scaffolding is down at Bedford Avenue and North 3rd Street and oh, what a sight it is!

Of particular interest to yours truly was the promise of a Duane Reade…

which, it should be noted, will be located right across the street from a veritable Williamsburg institution: Kings Pharmacy. I was not the only person who questioned the wisdom of this business placement. A number of passersby took notice as well. Then again, it’s not like Bedford Avenue hasn’t borne witness to this kind of thing before.

Tonight the Mister and I showed some friends from out of town the sights in Little Italy. When I saw the following (which hails from Mott Street) I stopped dead in my tracks.

My god, WHO would buy— much less be seen in public— such a thing? Only a certifiable asshole would carry a handbag like this.

No one in our party saw fit to disagree with the aforementioned observation. Then I noticed another item of interest in same said window.

I guess there aren’t as many assholes in New York City as there used to be.

Who says the recession is necessarily a bad thing?
