LAST GASP Part II: Coffee, Tea or Me?

Tonight as my buddy Rachael and I were eating dinner at Casanova’s we received a most unexpected appetizer.

This kitten came tearing into the restaurant like a bat out of hell. After making it all the way to back of the restaurant she finally calmed down enough for me to get her in a box— and spring into action. I calmly called a good friend of mine, Laura, who recently had the misfortune of putting one of her cats to sleep. Tat 2, as she was known, had cancer. Well, I think you can figure out the rest.

Welcome home McGuinness!

Miss Heather

P.S.: For those of you keeping track, last week I had to place a cat that was brought into the junk shop on a dolly. WTF?

UPDATE, June 10, 2010:

McGuinness’s new “mom” writes:

She didn’t eat all night long. She slept. Today she woke up all bright eyed but wouldn’t eat. She kept sticking her head in my armpit. Definitely looked like she’d never eaten solid food before. Well anyway, I stuck a little in her mouth today, and wow! She decided this food thing is really cool. After only one night of Bacitracin and Aloe paste, the cuts is pretty much closed and the redness almost gone. All in all, I think she’s doing very well. She was very scared the first night. After all, it’s a noisy family and we were moving stuff. She seems to be getting used to it already.

UPDATE, June 11, 2010:

Here’s McGuinness all cleaned up!

She went to vet earlier today and I am pleased to report she got a clean bill of health!

LAST GASP: Tipper R.I.P.

It is with a heavy heart I announce that Tipper, the big brother and den mother to the Oak Street kittens, has passed on. I learned this today from the woman whose property his little pride inhabits: her name is Jane. She said it happened a couple weeks ago and she has no idea what happened. One day she left her house and found him dead.

Goodbye little angel. You will be missed.

FRIDAY: Beer For Breakfast!

June 9, 2010 ·

This item comes courtesy of the folks at The Habitat. Nicole writes:

I realize this might be last minute but I wanted to send you some information regarding an art opening we are hosting this Friday night June 11th.  We are collaborating with our upstairs neighbors, The Cee Flat Gallery, to display the works of Nicholas Hartman.  Nicholas is coincidentally our graphic designer who creates all of our promotional posters and advertisements (he has basically been instrumental in creating our brand).  He is also a talented screenprinter and painter and the theme of his solo show is, ironically, beer and Brooklyn.  We will be showing his prints in the bar (in a repetitive street art type design) and the Cee Flat will be exhibiting other screenprints as well as larger scale paintings.  This is actually our first art opening, but we are using this show to promote both our venues for future local art events.  The event begins at 6pm with complimentary beer, wine, and food at The Cee Flat.  The party continues all night at The Habitat with $3 Brooklyn Drafts and $1 Empanadas…

This sound like a pretty nifty way to kick off the weekend if I say so myself. Check it out!

The Falafel Front Marches South: Yummus Hummus

If you have read this blog from an appreciable period of time you know Greenpoint has recently been blessed with many a restaurant serving middle eastern fare. Mediterranean Shawarma, Kestane Kebab and Grill & Greens are but to name a few. So you can imagine my surprise when I took a sojourn south (READ: to “East Williamsburg”) and stumbled upon this.

Yummus Hummus. Intrigued and hungry I went inside.

And I decided to give the “Hummus  Hot” and a glass of iced tea a whirl. This came out to $8.50, which struck me as being pricey— but you should keep in mind yours truly is acclimatized to getting a falafel sandwich with the fixings and a “free” drink for $4.00 from Mediterranean Shawarma. But I suppose the question on everyone’s mind is this:  was it, as they say, yummus?

Yes it was! The “hot” hummus was, in fact, hot. The above bowl of goodness you should know was accompanied with pita bread, gerkins, assorted olives and crumbled feta. The iced tea was Earl Grey with a hint of mint. All in all everything was tasty but— as I said before— kind of expensive. New York Shitty analysis: given the dearth of food options in this area, the fact the people who operate this is establishment are quite nice and the hummus is as yummy as professed, I think these folks might be around for awhile!

Oh yeah, and they make all their coffee via French press.

P.S.: I was also told by the owner of this establishment that a bar is slated to open next door. The liquor license has been issued. The only hold-up is occupancy-related paperwork.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Satisfied Customer!

Remember the item I posted yesterday about someone canvassing construction sites in Greenpoint with fliers advertising cast-off bathtubs once intended to grace the Trump Soho Hotel? Well, I am pleased to announce I have been contacted by a satisfied customer! Al writes:

Hey,
I’m a big fan of your blog. If been following for a little while now. Just thought it would be worth mentioning I actually purchased 2 of these tubs, and I must say they’re actually legit. Definitely was a bit skeptical before I saw them but I’ve referred a few interested friends since I had mine installed.

So there have you. You know what they say: a satisfied customer is the best kind of advertising you can get! Put me down for two!
