Coming To 85 Driggs Avenue: Donia Cafe
My buddy over at Brooklyn Imbecile beat me to the punch on this one. He writes:
Back in early February, I posted an item wondering what was going down at Greenpoint’s least consistently open cafe on the corner of Driggs Avenue & Monitor Street. There have been power tools going and lights on inside ever since and now we know that yet another cafe is, “Opening Soon”. Donia sounds Italian to me, like a form of Donna. I wouldn’t get your hopes up. They may be “Opening Soon”, but based on this location’s past, it may be closing soon, too.
Methinks Donia will be Middle Eastern fare. Here’s why:
- The permits issued for this property.
- I have found no liquor license applications for this property whatsoever. Muslims disdain serving spirits (which is understandable given their beliefs).
- The Greenpoint Law of (over)Abundance: we have a falafel/kebab cart on Noble Street, Mediterranean Shawarma and God Bless Deli on Manhattan Avenue both; Kestane Kebab on Nassau Avenue and Bagels On The Run, once again on Manhattan Avenue. The latter-most is renovating and will be serving Gyro goodness.
It is only natural that Donia Cafe will be a Middle Eastern restaurant. Not that I am complaining, mind you. My falafels are exploding with delight!

BREAKING: Fire At 1115 Manhattan Avenue
When I heard the sirens I knew something was up. When this kept going on for a good five minutes I knew it was bad. So I tossed on my coat and headed down to see what’s up.
It certainly looks bad. In the meantime here’s what little I know (courtesy of Jake Dobkin— thanks!): it is a 2 alarm fire and a resident of this building is being treated for injuries. Exactly what those injuries are has yet to be determined. Yikes!

This must have sprung up near overnight because I haven’t noticed it all. There’s a new vet opening on nassau and eckford. Maybe you reported on this and I haven’t seen the post, but they are in the phase where the IT guy is involved (he’s who I spoke to there) so they must be pretty far along.
Needless to say I headed down today without delay.
Sure enough, it would appear the Garden Spot is slated to get a veterinarian’s office! I asked the gentleman working atop the scaffolding is he had any idea as to when this establishment was going to open. He said he didn’t know. Given what I saw on the ground floor, I’d say soon.
What’s more, Greenpoint Veterinary Hospital is conveniently located off the Nassau Avenue stop of the G train and the B48 bus! But let’s defer to the experts: the hardworking chaps from National Grid working across the street. They took a keen interest in my keen interest in this establishment. After I offered to take their portrait (because they offered to take mine) we got down to brass tacks.
Me: As far as I know Greenpoint doesn’t have a veterinarian. People have to go to Long Island City or Williamsburg. This is a big deal.
National Grid Dude (talking to one of his comrades): You know, now that I think of it, I haven’t seen a veterinarian office here.
Me: It’s conveniently located near the G train and the B48 bus to boot!
N.G.B.: This is a good location. Smart move on their part.
Me: I’m going to alert my readers to this. I write a blog about north Brooklyn and I’m always getting asked about veterinarians in Greenpoint.
N.G.B.: You write a blog? Cool.
Me: Thanks. By the way, if you haven’t tried Kestane Kebab just down the street, you should. It’s very tasty.

Spotted At T & N Wine & Liquor: Chicks & Bunnies
When I hopped off the bus after today’s sojourn I encountered this, the latest window display at T & N Wine and Liquor. As you can see it is garnering a great deal of attention. When I arrived home my inbox was filled with inquiries as to what is going to happen to these chicks after Easter. Here’s the scoop per this establishment’s proprietor, Chris. CAVEAT: this story does not have a happy ending.
Chris purchased these chicks from a hatchery. He ordered twenty five of them so they tossed in one more (the dark one) for free. Believe it or not these little ones were delivered via the United States Postal Service. He had to go to our illustrious post office to pick them up. After Easter they will go to a farm a friend of his owns upstate. Here they will live for six weeks. After that they will be dinner. Apparently this variety of chicken is has been bred/engineered for body mass. After six weeks their legs can no longer support their bodies.

UPDATE, April 1, 2010: I have just learned that Chris has changed his plan. Anyone who wants a chick after Easter can have one. Oh yeah, as for the rabbits: they belong to a friend.
UPDATE, April 2, 2010: It would appear that NBC surfs blogs for leads. As it would happen I spoke with the proprietor of T & N Wine and Liquor last night. He told me that the reporter said they learned about his display “on the Internet”.
