Way To Go MGM Demo!

(Or Would That Be MMG Design?) Yes, it would appear that Marie Grasso has earned yet another Stop Work Order in our fine borough!

On May 2, 2008 I wrote:

This is 186 Green Street. Or should that be this was 186 Green Street?* Note the new name for her business: MGM Demolition. This ploy is elegant in its simplicity: instead of addressing her firm’s less than professional conduct, just change the name of the firm and hope no one notices. Brilliant! Anyone care to place bets as to when this site will get hit with its first Stop Work Order?

Miss Heather writes May 18, 2008: if anyone out there bet ten days (after May 2) for 186 Green Street to get a Stop Work Order, you win!!!

And everyone else loses.

Marie Grasso has accrued quite a collection of Stop Work Orders. They do not seem to change her firm’s behavior. She continues to shill her services and developers still see fit to hire her. When will this stop?

In Other News…

It would appear that the reports of the death of Shanghai Lee have been greatly exaggerated. As I learned earlier this week they have simply relocated to 157 Franklin Street. They did a lovely job renovating the space, but I am more interested to learn what the food is like. Anyone?

Williamsburg Pay Phone du Jour: Graham Avenue

While appearing to be in working order, I felt this pay phone (which is located in front of Phoebe’s in Williamsburg) was well worth passing along.

Who couldn’t help but crack a smile using a phone that look likes this. And let’s face facts, if you’re using a public pay phone the news you have to relay is probably not good.

95 Clay Street Is Ready To Rent!

May 17, 2008 ·

Yesterday evening I received the following compelling comment regarding this post. Gary Floyd writes:

So I responded to an ad off CL for 95 Clay Street, listing 3 bedrooms for $1750 (should’ve know something was up right there) without knowing about the naughty history. This was two weeks ago, and me and my roommates spent the last two weeks trying to give the owner a check and all our application forms, thinking what a great deal it we were about to get. Then Friday, we finally found out the truth: the building is illegal, the ownership is unknown, there is no management company and the owner is a psycho. Inside, the apartments are nice and new, but after the broker found out about the shady dealings, he said he should definitely withdraw our application. So be warned: nothing in Greenpoint will ever cost below $2000 for a three bed, unless it’s a tainted dumpster.

Let this be a warning to anyone out there who is shopping for an apartment be it in Greenpoint or elsewhere. If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. While hardly fool-proof here are a few suggestions as to how to make a more informed decision when shopping for an apartment.

  1. After viewing the apartment, Google the address and read what comes up.
  2. ALWAYS check the records on HPD and the Department of Buildings. All buildings will have violations but if you see something like this, buyer beware!
  3. Ask around. Talk to a neighbor or current tenant of the property in question. They are an invaluable source of information not only about any possible maintenance issues the apartment might have, but also the neighborhood in general.

Happy hunting!

P.S.: Tomorrow night at 9:00 p.m. East Coast Aliens will be featuring the Fritz Lang film, M. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and the price of admission us $6.00. Here’s a fact I learned about this film via IMDb:

The extras playing the members of the criminal gang were real life delinquents: before the end of the filming 24 of them were put into jail.

Another Bar Cometh To Greenpoint

May 16, 2008 ·

I have often wondered (as many of you probably have) what is going on at this space at 113 Franklin Street. Well, thanks to a tipster now I know. It is slated to be a bar called (get this) The Production Lounge. It will apparently be a “theme” establishment and will sport director’s chairs for seating. This will make six bars on Franklin Street, lest any of you are keeping count.

Fedders Friday: Wafertecture Fit For A King!

May 16, 2008 ·
Filed under: Articles of Fedderization, Fedders Friday, Williamsburg

Yesterday I expounded upon the phenomenon known as “crapification“. Today, in the spirit of Fedders Friday I will throw out a new piece of D-list real estate terminology for your delectation: wafertecture.

Wafertecture (waf’-er-tek’-cher) n. An architectural style commonly employed in the outer boroughs of New York City. Primary distinguishing characteristics include a strong resemblance to a vanilla wafer.

This stylistic genre first caught my eye in Bed-Stuy. Initially I thought it was merely an isolated incident accident. It wasn’t, as I learned on Siegel Street recently.

You can almost taste the rich vanilla goodness from a block away. Yummy.

This slab of sugar looks good enough to eat! I sure hope there isn’t an evil witch lying in wait inside.

Come to think of it, those Fedders boxes have made me lose my appetite. The gratuitous keystones only add to my aesthetic dyspepsia.

But I who am I to judge? These homes are fit for a king! As my husband noted, these lovely four family homes reference the Tudor style— as in two doors rammed together.

Looks like Hansel (or Gretel) escaped!

Miss Heather

P.S.: This piece of shit goes out to Queens Crap.
